Stokie Accent

Ever since working away for the last few years people still can't recognise my accent.

In the past people have thought i was Brummy , Manc , Scouse , yorkshireman and even Welsh! anyone else have the same problem ?

Ive been mistaken for American and Australian but then none of the locals seem to know where England is... when they do "get it" they think Im from manchester [united], liverpool, chelsea, arsenal or manchester [city]... although I do throw the odd "way aye man" "gan yem" "am ya" "go ed" in to confuse things a bit...

Non taken Bon'Ami

When they ask, they have a slight glint in their eye like they know you're English but think it'll grate on you if they say Australian, the cheeky blighters! The fact it doesn't annoy me in the slightest is apparently irrelevant.

These days should I mention I was born in Stoke-on-Trent the most popular reply is...'Ah! Robbie Williams'

Cost thay still towk rate if thee wonts, Baz?

I usually get asked if I'm a Scouser when away from home when I get talking to people.

One thing I find is that when in Stoke everyone sounds normal but when I hear a Stoke accent out the area or on holiday it sticks out a mile and is easily recognisable.

Not having d response!lived in Stoke for 45 years I don't think I have an accent as such but I'm amazed at the number of people who ask me whereabouts in Stoke I'm from after I have said a few words which usually gets followed up by some comment about the team from the dark side which in turn elicits a sharp 2 word response!

I have been asked if I'm from Liverpool, Black Country, West Country!!!! and yes also Oz!

Not that well Tosh

I think I've mentioned to you before Tosh that when my eldest brother and dad got together they would slip into the Potteries talk as to completed lose me in the conversations.

A mate of mine - ex Watford - would say that anyone from beyond the Watford Gap is a Northerner

I've lived away from Stoke-on-Trent for over 40 odd years and haven't lost a trace of the accent or dialect. I still use the same phrases such as "Me car or where you off etc" and it's a never ending source of humor with friends of all nationalities. Within four weeks of being in the USA my kids had lost all trace of their English accents and sounded like the locals much to the chagrin of my son as American females love an English accent, however he makes up for it on trips to Spain!

My accent and dialect are me, they're part of who I am.

I get the scouse thing when in the UK.

Nobody outside of Stoke has ever got mine right but I lived 9 years in Yorkshire and 6 near Nottingham and now near Stratford upon Avon where they haven't really got much of an accent. However if I ever hear a recording of myself its blatantly a Stoke accent to me.

They just think I'm northern here which is a badge of honour!

Sometimes I have missed a Stoke accent myself when away from the area and that is reprehensible.
