Match thread: Port Vale v Wolves

Such is the modern penchant for playing inverted wingers. Even Micky Adams (widely regarded as being old school/dinosaur-like in his tactical approach) used this to good effect by playing Myrie-Williams on his wrong side. It's becoming less and less common for a winger to go outside his man and then lump a hopeful percentage ball in the area.

Much more difficult to hit a cross into the box when running at speed, by playing on the opposite wing the player can stand and deliver with much better results.

Only watched first half got go to a wedding reception. Vale played some nice stuff, not many chances created by both teams, pretty even. I was very impressed by Nathan Smith, won everything in

the air with good distribution, looks solid.

Early days i know but how he has played so far in pre season and how he performed for Torquay he should be given another contract asap

Very impressed with Vale yesterday:

Smith, Tavares, Foley (MOTM), Pereira, Thomas, Tyson, Hooper all stood out in the game for me. I thought we looked a lot better side with two up front, especially with JJ. Knops didn't look like a LB for me, more of a centre half. Mac-Intosch came on and did a good job and he was surprisingly good on the ball as I thought he'd be a bit like Sakho from Liverpool but thankfully he wasn't. Amoros looked decent but surely he isn't a CM, he looked too small to play that role. Cecilia held the ball up very well against two big CB, and was surprisingly better with his feet than his head. Forrester came on but I couldn't really judge him. Grant was his usual self, I hope he stays. The reception Grant got was very good, no boos and majority standing up and clapping him, this was a little surprising considering the amount of abuse he's got since his transfer request.

On that preformance yesterday, I think we'll be fine and could be the dark horses.

You make some good points, but how can you be too small to be a central midfielder? That's a quite baffling statement. Xavi has done alright in the center of midfield throughout his career, despite only being about 5'6. Our very own Ian Bogie wasn't a bad central midfielder either.
