Changing history

If you could go back in time and change ONE event in all of history..... what would it be?

I would have gone back a few thousand years and banned religion of any sort. The advancement of science has been held back probably around a 1000 years by religion. I've lost relatives to illnesses I am sure we would have had a cure for had religion not been around.

I was going o try and give a funny answer but actually that's an excellent shout.

When you look at religion it's like a massive fairy story normally adults would be told to grow out of.

For me it's an excuse to use a fantasy to start wars and as you say hold back science.

I guess most people would suggest the birth of dictators, wars or change something passionate to them such as the death of a loved one, winning of a major lottery prize or winning of a football match etc but banning of religion is a good shout without wishing to upset those that choose to believe (and don't bother others with it).

Stop Jesus from being crucified. (assuming he existed)

No crosses. No churches. No promotion of "suffering" as a way of life. Perhaps religion would have run its course and never rose to the position of power it is today.

Other than that... I would go back in time (several times) and view the JFK assassination from different angles and actually find out how many gunmen there was.

If anyone is interested in this concept of changing an event in history can I recommend Ben Elton's book "Time and Time Again". I won't tell you all the details but it is about a bloke attempting to prevent the assassination in Sarajevo. Very good read.

  • 2 weeks later...

Outside of certain events in my family...the Aberfan disaster...for reasons I have never quite been able to put my finger on it has always had an impact on me greater than anything similar. Not the biggest disaster in history nor the greatest human folly but..for some reason it sticks with me..to have been able to warn them and get them to safety.......
