In that 5-3 loss didn't both Brownbill and Mickey Moore score for them?

Absolutely correct...

13/04/79 Football League Division Four

Wigan 5 - 3 Vale

wigan scorers Houghton 3, Brownbill, Moore att 8,452

Take no notice of the REP-tile, Springfield Park was not a 'dump' - for a non-league side just attaining league status in those days it had a unique charm with brilliant views from the steep stand at the top and a nice covered side with a low roof that generated lots of atmosphere. A big grassy hill behind one goal, and plenty of good refreshments. As anyone can see from this gate, it also held more than some L2 grounds do now.

Last time we played wigan at home was boxing day 2002 we lost one nil think it was jason de vos or another of there centre halves at the time scoring the goal.crowd was about 6500 sure wigan brought about 1500 to 2000 that day.

That's correct,I helped to sponsor that game,Wigan had Roberts and Ellington up front and Tony Dinning in midfield and we had Paynter,McPhee and Brooker up front if I remember correctly.

When was last time we played Wigan in the league.? I've got 1-0 away in my head, Ian Armstrong with only goal?

I think it was the return game that season, at home on Boxing Day. We lost 1-0, late header from a corner. I think it was De Zeeuw.

Last time we beat Wigan at home was the day the Queen Mother died.

Both games ended 0-1 to the away team in 2002,Ian Armstrong scored the winner in August in the 45th minute and Jason de Vos scored at Vale Park on Boxing Day in the 69th minute.

The last time we beat them at home was on the 30th March,2002 when Steve Brooker also scored in the 45th minute.

Yes, me too, we are all showing our age. The Vale were unbeaten in the league and Wigan were the best non-league side, so the game was featured on live radio - so what, some may think, but only one match was on live radio each Saturday then.

I went to the replay, extra time and struggled back to London and spent half the night on Euston station then went directly to work in the city rather than try to get home 15 miles out in the suburbs.

Same happened at the 2nd replay, as an over-enthusiastic teenager I wasn't going to miss a chance to see Vale play at Old Trafford, but it was a rough night with the ugliest hard nuts that supported United coming to the game to get at Vale fans, they took Wigan to their heart.

Same again, back on a late late train and no way to get home from Euston, so straight to work - would probably finish me off now, but all part of the rich Vale experience at the time.

The games tired Vale out a bit and the unbeaten league record went against Scunthorpe soon after but we still got promoted - that was a great team for hard work and true grit even if it wasn't the most skilful, Gordon Lee was the manager and it was a good season, especially the 2 games against Wrexham. I think the away game got 19000 as a crowd and there was no end of trouble - but that's another story.

I remember the frighing 5-3 as well, was living up here by then, and Wigan just a short hop. What a disaster - 65 minutes or more gone and then 5 goals conceded after showing no sign of any problem. I prefer to remember the 4-0 win about 1993 when Bernie Slaven ran them ragged, but I do miss Springfield Park, a truly English ground with bags of character.

remember somebody named Keegan playing for Scunny--------------wonder what happened to him
