Stan Bowles

Just seen that the great Stan Bowles has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Poor bloke, it's a dreadful condition that, unfortunately, I have too much first hand experience of.

 

Apart from playing for Crewe :rolleyes: he has to be one of the best players I've had the privilege to watch, a sublime talent and one of the group of superbly able players that could / should have landed us a World Cup in the 70's if it weren't for the anally retentive suits at the FA who deemed him worthy of only 5 England caps. Criminal.

 

My favourite quote about him was 'if he could pass a bookie's like he passed the ball he'd be a rich man'. Therein lay his problem, as with quite a few players.

 

I also remember him playing for QPR at Stoke just after his wife had left him and the Lardies were singing 'Stanley, where's your wife, Stanley, Stanley, where's your wife?' He shrugged his shoulders at the Boothen End then proceeded to score against them. Class.

Very sad. As am aside, always thought he was the double of Terry Jones in Monty Python.

Yes, Stan hope you have as comfortable a time as possible. My Mum suffered the same condition so my sympathies and thoughts are with your loved ones too during your illness. Great player that graced our football feilds.

I remember being at Stoke when he's just split up from his Missus and the Boothen End singing "Stanley, Stanley, where's your wife?" in the warm up. He sat on the ball, smiled and just shrugged his shoulders as if to say, "I don;t know!" Even the Neanderthals on the Boothen laughed and clapped him....a real character.

Enjoyed life to the full and great football talent, shame England couldn't harness the talents of him or Rodney Marsh during the dark days of the mid to late 70's.

sorry to hear of one of the great players of the 70's diagnosed with alzheimers, stan was a sublime passer of the ball , I think it was the crewe manager who made that remark about if he could pass a betting shop like he passes a ball and always split his money giving half to his wife otherwise the lot would have gone and didn't he pose with a topless model whilst on England duty,ah memories eh!,hope the modern drugs help you stan,you gave lots of pleasure to all football fans and we all wish you the best.

Hope he receives excellent treatment and care. Some of the greed merchants of the Premier League should consider backing research in gratitude for his on field performances.

He was a great player to watch, a bit of a maverick but a very skillful player, much better than his cousin Paul who played for us in the late 70's anyway..:rolleyes:
