Well deserved after winning the development league!

I really believe we should have a policy where we loan out all these young players to conference sides to get some professional game time. I feel sorry for Lloyd and other young players we have promoted before who are just rotting in the reserves. Even if we send them out without teams paying anything towards wages, it'd be better money spent than these players sitting in the reserves.

If season ticket sales dont meet expected levels they may well be the team next season :nailbiting:

To be fair Lloyd has been out, they just didn't want to keep him, Smith's been out too.

If they are good enough they will play. One word of caution though, it's a massive step up to the first team.

I've seen them play on a regular basis geo, and it would surprise me, if all five of them aren't playing some part in the first team next season, the one to watch is Jon Kapend, and the one that should be with the first team squad at this moment and time, is young Enoch Andoha, he as just been called up to the Gana under 23s, he is the best young prospect Iv'e seen since Robbie Earle.

I hope you're right - Quite looking forward to pre-season now already!

He certainly is, he reminds me a bit like Mark Chamberlain, not as tall, infact about an inch smaller than Shucker, but man, can he move, for his short legs, he is the quickest, footballer that Iv'e seen in a Vale shirt in the 60years of supporting the club, and there is some venum and accuracy, when he sends a ball in from the wing.

I wish them all the luck in the world... it would be nice to get a bit of class and sparkle in the team

I'd love to see us generating some genuinely successful players from our youth set up but I'll reserve judgement on these lads until I've seen them play first team football, it's a big step up and it isn't all about skill; for example, Ryan Lloyd has loads of technical ability but I think he's struggled with the physicality of the game and whether or not he can gain that extra body strength and toughness is unknown, another example was Ian Armstrong, gifted but too small and lightweight.

Anyway, it would be great if these lads were the next Earle, Sproson, Porter, etc., etc.

A very good point.

Footballers nowadays are very fit, strong, powerfully built and, in many cases, quite tall.

Unless you can cope with the physicality of the game you won't make it unless you are an exceptional ball player.

Stand on the touchline and watch teams warming up. Most of the players are huge specimens.

It becomes more obvious as you go up the leagues. Take SCFC as an example. Their keeper is 6/6, Shawcross - what - 6/4, the same as the new German centre half, Cameron is another 6 footer, so is NZonzi, Crouch is 6/7, Walters is over 6 foot. All are well built too. And so it goes on.

It would indeed to be wonderful to see even 1-2 lads make the first team but for every one who makes it there are hundreds who sadly fall by the wayside.

The other problem we have is that we don't have a very good standard of reserve team football and they don't play games every week. I remember years ago our reserves played in the Cheshire League, home & away, each week, and I'm sure it helped their development. I think Bobby Mountford scored a few at that level if anyone remembers him.

I think the Chairman has shown some good creativity in bringing in capable loan players. He is clearly thinking about the way forward for Port Vale and effective development of academy players is another potentially useful strategy. In the end the players have to develop and be good enough to play at league 1 level and its a pretty high standard. It is also hard because the 4 relegated situation leaves most of the division a few defeats away from the trap door most of the season and this limits the opportunities available.

We should have beaten Crewe at home this season. We had the wrong team on the pitch with Williamson and Dodds up front. The answer to Crewe was to over power their young players and particularly in defence. Once Pope came on that nearly happened. To me this shows the physical adjustment that needs to be made to go from being an academy / reserve player to playing in league 1. It is a big jump and Port Vale already have insufficient physical resilience in defence. The turnover of players in the summer needs to be well managed to achieve a viable balance of ability, experience, fitness, strength, pace etc.
