Match Thread: Birmingham v Port Vale (League Cup)

Great result, but how Walter’s is struggling to get in the squad is madness. If he doesnt start, never mind make the squad on Saturday then it’s something personal, because he offers something the others dont. Croasdale, Walter’s and Byers when hes back. Our midfield three picks themselves. Ben can play number 10.

Not really sure how its madness - Byers and Croasdale are performing well. It's just limited spaces and great depth.

Shipley is there for set pieces, then Garrity is our captain, and Rico is barely featuring but makes the bench.

I think even if you were set on 3 of these players, you'd easily have one or two players you'd wonder how they can't get in.

Not really sure how 'Garrity' playing the 10 works, unless we go with 1 striker. There's 11 spots in the team and we are currently playing 2 up top.

Lots of positives to take from last night for me. The goalie looks a brilliant pick up, made me feel much more confident when balls came into the area. Walters, Humphreys, Gabriel, Jesse and Croasdale all superb. Faal shows flashes of good player but is sloppy with possession, I think him and Curtis are the best of the options we have in the building right now.

What about Ojo, who's arguably been our player of the season so far?

Saw a lot of folk write off this game. Put the reserves out. Get beat and 'focus on the league'.

Never understood this mentality. Knockout football for 90 minutes. It was just the tonic after a bitter week. Suddenly, everyone has a massive lift.

The performance isn't a surprise to me. We're a good side, full of good players and battle. We've always been brilliant without the ball. We were the better side, creating the better chances and carrying the greater threat throughout. The defensive set-up was excellent and didn't give them a sniff. We've played well for most of the games this season and just been a bit unfortunate that the ball hasn't bounced our way. Anyone could see that.

They were a classic quasi-Barcelona side who can't handle set-pieces and can't break down a well-oiled machine. We just outran and outfought them, which will win most games. They were chucking big name after big name on and they had little-to-no impact. Stansfield might as well not bothered.

Won't single out any individuals, just that a lot of them earned the shirt tonight and it's down to the others to win it back. Thought Moore might go back to his favoured 343 and we looked very dangerous.

Just keep it in mind - we're a good side. We might not win on Saturday. We've got to keep our heads. The rewards will come and we've just got to do what we did tonight - stick with a very decent side that have been on the wrong end of some bad luck for a few weeks.

All I care about, is PVFC.

I think Vale needed to play away from home.  Last week was two home games when the club was under a bit of a cloud.  We don't have any fancy skilled players who can turn on a bit of magic at home, which is what is often needed to overcome away teams.  But we are that 'well oiled machine' which can win well away from home.

Its fascinating that we have an ounce of the budget of the "big boys", yet we can outplay and out fight many of them on the night due to being a team - watching them lot last night, even the commentators said that despite every big name substitute coming on, it made absolutely no difference to their play and result - I know he gets some stick, but as others have said on here, that was a Darren Moore masterclass last night 👏👏👏👏👏👏

It also goes to show that you should spend your transfer kitty wisely - all their "big names" were to a man, a bit w@anky w@nky - and I do wonder what Connor Hall would have said to that 🔔 end Stansfield at the end of the match 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Some of our football this season has been fantastic and as we all know, we just havent had the fine margins, but im convinced it will come good

Lets all be thankful for what we have got (yes I know we need a striker) in manager, players and owner 👏👏👏👏👏

Agreed Hoppers, superb performance by all. Lots of voices pre match about picking names out of a hat and in for a spanking etc. But results like that don't happen by accident, I've given up trying to second guess what Moore is thinking but everything he does is for a reason. It doesn't always work of course, but I feel like he plans for every minute detail and realistically, we've only been outplayed for about 80mins cumulatively over all the games so far.

Just missing a healthy 'goals scored' column. I'm still positive it will come and last night, even with their big names on, we more than coped with them.

I think it's fair that things are freshened up considering results. Walters deserves a start, alongside two of Byers, Croasdale, and Garrity.

We need to settle, we don't know the best combinations with the new and developing players. Tolaj left earlier than expected. September should be more settled. Enjoy the journey.

I thought Faal did well as the lone striker, and no doubt DM will want to revert to that formation at stages this season. After all, our main gripe was that Tolaj was better in a front two and, well, that was then and this is now. Paton had a couple of neat passages of play as well but would need to get around a lot more, that said we were sitting deeper so he was quite isolated.

Fourth visit to St. Andrews to see Birmingham v PV and I'm pleased to report that my record of having never seen us lose there over the years is still intact! Well done the lads!

Now stick a striker in that squad and it will do well in League One

Welĺ done, after our last cup win at St Andrews we went on to draw at Anfield 0-0.

Why do you refer to Leeds as 'dirty'?

Hunter, giles, bremner charlton etc.

I know everyone is commenting about Walters - and rightly so; thought he was great last night, though seemed to be blowing a little towards the end. But I thought Faal was far better last night than he was on Saturday.  I think give him another handful of games and he really will be match fit and a danger to opponents.

Great to see Ben come on again last night - getting fitter each time; just needs more minutes.

Byers back at the weekend.  I have faith for this season.  Yes, we need another striker - possibly two.  But I still see us top-10 this year
