Summer transfer rumours and speculation

Im not sure but how does it work if we loan players out does that leave room for signings? I could definitely see shorrock and lomax going on loan, possibly paton too and Im still hoping we get an offer for ojo, frankly I'd cut my losses and let him go for free if anyone wants him.

If you think we're getting a fee for a player who is 34 in the first month of the season and in all probability in his last season in the EFL good luck. We are more likely to have to subsidise his wages if he agrees a move. Pope got paid more by Bury than us early in his return,  Moore is still getting money off previous clubs. When Dodds returned Aspin said he was almost costing the club nothing due to the high percentage of his wage paid by Chesterfield. He may move, it may be reported as an undisclosed fee as all transfers are currently. That will not mean it hasn't cost the club a lot of money.

One thing that dawned on me is that there is potentially a bit more money left in the budget. Unlike last year I wouldn't say we've made a single marquee signing. Humphries and Gabriel will be on a decent whack but not ridiculous . The rest won't be on much I wouldn't have thought. We've also not spent a transfer fee I don't think. I just wonder whether Moore has saved a bit back to get a marquee signing in. Considering we were told that the budget is competitive, it still feels like there should be quite a bit left.

The last year with accounts filed by all clubs was our first back in league 1, when Moore took Wednesday back to promotion.  The mean salary was 7,045 per week. There are quite a few attempts to estimate the mean online. The best estimates come in at around 6,000 and is probably more realistic as it excludes high earners like Barry Bannon; who was on 21k a week. That comes to an average player costing 312,000 per year. So one average league 1 player needs 891 early bird season tickets to fund their employment costs.

If you look at our new signings:

Gabriel - probably on a bit more than the average, ex Championship player

Humphreys - probably a bit more ex Championship player whose current club had made on offer to

Shipley - was supposedly a high earner (allegedly highest) at Shrewsbury so average wage or a little above

Marosi - see Shipley,  left Shrewsbury for more money as was supposed to sign for Rotherham in a move that broke down

Richards - probably less but significant

Gordon - Walsall weren't high payers in league 2 so I'm guessing just a high league 2 wage

Waine - although ex Championship probably about the same as Gordon,  maybe a bit more than him as strikers cost more

The salaries of the first 4 will have added significantly to our outgoings. Of the players Smith and Chislett would have been on good money but less than the first 2 on the list in all probability.  Lowe on ok money but probably less than the 2 at Shrewsbury.  Sang and Harper just decent league 2 wages.

Just putting things into perspective a 22 man squad of average league 1 players costs 6.84 million. That's not viable on our gates. Our wage bill for 25/26 will be by some distance the highest in the history of the club as there are normally salary increase included in contracts in the event of promotion.

The income for L1 clubs as a base line is about £2M from EFL solidarity payments and broadcasting. This is up from 1.5M from L2.

Then you've got sponsorships on top of that, no idea on value of that.

So when you factor in the losses of about 3M on the company accounts, could be anywhere up to 50% more than that now in L1 if you factor in we probably pay out about 5 or 6 million for lower end L1 in wages etc. But complete guesswork really.

In other words, we've got bloody good owners / custodians of our club investing in the team and the club as a whole.

Another good episode - been listening while out walking this morning

Why are people getting so bothered about the registration rules, I'm sure a professional football club knows what they are doing in terms of numbers of players registered, chill out the lot of ya.

You'd be surprised sometimes 😄

I do think there are some who are just anxious for season to start and with the transfer window being open for a long time yet, still expect more even though we are more or less ready to go. Size of the squad just brings up the registration thing, particularly as people still want us to have as many strikers as Chelsea have goalkeepers 😉

I certainly wouldn't expect a whole lot more from the window.

I've always thought so. I guess it's because the start of the season isn't on a fixed date.

I think we'll see at least one more and a good name signing up-front to give us options alongside Stockley.  I think, late on, you'll also see two - possibly three loans coming in from the Prem/Championship sides.

I have zero information to base that on - just my feeling.

Still think we're building a strong side, great in defence, very good in midfield - still a little light up front yet, and that we're going to give some out there quite a surprise this year.

10th for me this season. 👍

The EFL definition of an under 21 player for the 25/26 season is someone born on or after 1st January 2004. James Plant was born on 3rd November 2004 and therefore doesn't require registration within the 22 outfield players.

, "Under 21" refers to players who were born on or after January 1, 2004, for the 2024/2025 season

Its now 25/26

There are still 8 weeks to go for the squad list to be presented to the EFL

Current Free Agents that would add some good depth:

Coniah Boyce-Clark (GK) - Only 22 can loan out as a long-term investment

Louis Holzman (CB) - Young CB with League One experience, good depth

Dan Potts (CB) - Experienced CB with playing time at most levels, good depth

Josh Benson (DM) - Good injury cover if we can move Ojo on

Josh Koroma (FW) - Big name signing, would certainly challenge Tolaj for a starting spot

Luke Plange (FW) - Can play in multiple attacking positions, good competition alongside Rico
