Summer transfer rumours and speculation

So are the squad number rules for league 1 excluding U21 players (under 21 at the start of the season) max 22 players or is that outfield players excluding goalkeepers.....because if it includes goalkeepers we are already at 23 players so someone has to be unregistered or moved on say Ojo or if goalkeepers don't count then there is room for one more perhaps that Dutch trialist as back up for Stockley.

I don't understand why people are putting Byers ahead of other players such as Croasdale and Curtis or even Rico for a place in the first eleven at the start of the season. Although on occasions he did show some good touches towards the end of the season. I can't recall anything being overly impressive.

Do they even play the same role? Byers is a playmaker, Croasdale is an old fashioned vacuum cleaner in the middle, and is Curtis even a CM?

There’s not another midfielder in the squad that could play that pass Byers did to Headley for our second goal at Wimbledon. Don’t think Curtis is a reasonable comparison, both play very different position and to a certain extend so does Rico.

I feel that Walters and Byers play a very similar role. Therefore one of the others coming in would add something different. Yes he did put that pass in at Wimbledon. Put over the length of a game I don't think he was that influential. To me Walters certainly had a bigger effect on games they both played. However, hopefully, he will have more game time this season to show us what he can do

He was the best player on the pitch at Wimbledon by a country mile. Walks into our 11 alongside Walters

You watch him closely when he’s under pressure, he plays a different sport than the rest of our midfielders. I can count one hand and still have digits left to count the number of times he gives the ball away. Classy, very classy.
He doesn’t need to run around and chase a game like a Croasdsle or a Garrity because he plays a yard ahead of everyone else in his head. The number of times he’s in the right position to intercept or in space to receive a ball is no coincidence.
It’s not flashy or eye catching  though which is why it can go unnoticed.

He was instrumental in the run in and will be the 1st name on team sheet in the new season.
You may well be right. He has the ability to stand out at this level. I just don't feel he puts his stamp on the game as he should. I feel Croasdale should be ahead of him at the moment. Another whose hard work can go unnoticed. He didn't get fans and players player of the season for nothing. This is not meant to be a criticism of Byers, he is a fantastic talent to have in the squad. I just don't feel he has done enough yet. Hopefully a good run of games proves me wrong.

It's not under 21 at the start of the season, they have to be under 21 on 1 Jan during the season. So anyone under 21 on 1 Jan 26 counts as under 21 next season.  Plant was born in November so counts as over 21. If we'd kept Tommy McDermott who was in the same school year but born in June he would count as under 21.

Certainly in terms of quality on the ball Byers and Walters are some distance ahead of the other midfield players. Croasdale and Garrity have games where they struggle to pass to a shirt. Garrity has improved his distribution significantly but he's a long way short of Pirlo.

I don't know why, but I thought Paterson was about 36!

Surprised to see he's only 30.

Maybe it's the grey hair?!

I would just love to see us push the boat out and smash the ball out of the park to get Paterson(he can play in so many positions to start with) but as he is walking away he will have the choice of so many clubs even some probably in the Championship so i cant see that one sadly

I see that striker Olaofe has left Stockport for Charlton for a rumoured 1.5m and then Stockport break their record of 800k for Mothersille from Peterborough

I think we’ve played about 2 games in the entire Moore tenure with every player available, so calling people starters is a redundant phrase. It’s always a mix of starters, back-ups and just-please-don’t-<ovf censored>-this-up-because-we-have-no-option-but-to-give-you-minutes-ers. This window looks to be about having strong depth that can manage lack of availability, plus a few probable starters.
