Port Vale v Barrow match thread - 25 March

No chanting or atmosphere last night? First half fair enough, 2nd half the whole stadium got behind the lads with numerous moments of complete disbelief that the ball somehow  hadnt gone in. They gave it a right go and us supporters were with them.

It actually made me feel pretty emosh that we were with them and willing them on

And rightly so booed off at half time mate 👍🏻

We were crap last night but also incredibly unlucky. To hit the woodwork 4 times and have the keeper produce a couple of decent saves also and a few other near moments. They pretty much scored with there only shot and spent the whole second half time wasting, faking injury and the ref didn't nothing about it. Also surprised we didn't get a penalty considering the name Trevor kettle used to give penalties for fun, but his son gave nothing and no cards so perhaps total opposite to what his dad was.

Hackford should not be starting games, he is not good enough.

13 starts (11 League) W-D-L is 4-5-4 (4-4-3 league), win % of 30.7 (36.3 league). He has completed 90 minutes 3 times, and been subbed off at half time 4 times. Two goals, one in the Salford win, one in the Bradford loss. One of the 4 league wins was Newport in which he came off at HT, 1-2 down and we went on to win 3-2

14 sub apps (11 League) W-D-L is 7-4-3 (6-3-2 league), win % of 50.0 (54.5 league), however, I did notice that in those sub appearances only 3 results changed for the better since he came on (Accrington 2-2 (scored), MK Dons 0-1 (scored), Doncaster 0-1).

Yes, a good chunk of those starts were during our bad run before Xmas when we were severely hampered by injuries...But we didn't have an injury crisis up front. Take away his goals and we'd be 5 points worse off. But could we have found someone else to play 27 times and score enough goals to contribute 5 points? How many times did he start over Tolaj? This is without taking into account assists.

I don't mean to single him out but this does highlight the points we lose when we play with weakened teams.

I don’t agree. Just because players have a decent history Dosent mean naming them together will work.

As soon as I saw Hackford and Harper starting I didn’t think we would beat them.

The players were poor yes, but played in alien roles again (Hackford stuck out wide) Garrity sitting. The team selection was lunacy. Harper is useless, I agree but who selected him? Walters and Croasdale both sat on the bench, I’m adamant one of them would have been fit enough to start and last 60 minutes. Where is Chislett? He would offer more in that role.

The players were poor yes. But the tactics and team selection was horrendous. That loss is 100% on Darren Moore. Completely outclassed by a manager who’s managed 5 league matches.

Im also not giving him any credit for making the changes at half time.

1) Its his error. This has happened numerous times this season. A complete left field selection that everyone with a brain can see won’t work. Dosent work, then makes numerous changes at half time.
2)Why even leave it that long? We offered absolutely nothing in that first half, letting Barrow dictate play. Everyone could see that Hackford out wide wasn’t working and that Harper was doing literally nothing. Haul them off or change the formation and get Hackford through the middle. Harper playing half arsed, get him off, 30 mins get him off and get someone on who will try.
3) We still came out at half time with 5 defenders, 3 cbs of which all have little to no quality on the ball. If he insists on that back 5 (another gripe of mine) then get bloody Clarke on. If he has to play that back 5 then get Debrah off, put Sang in RCB and then get Clarke on. You have a more attacking wing back on and a player who can actually pass in that back 3. Debrah was awful last night so for me should have come off at half time and replaced by Clarke.

100% on Moore that. We have to beat Crewe now given that he’s rested players for it.

Agreed. Debrah and Smith (and Heneghan) should only ever be in the middle of the back three. Playing them anywhere else ruins the system.

I’d keep Debrah as a back up next year as he’s a good option to have with pace and is young enough to develop (As Joe pointed out a while ago), but I wouldn’t keep the other two. For that matter, if we’re in L1 I wouldn’t have Hall either and Sang is 50/50 as back up.

For sure. Maybe now Big D will understand and acknowledge what it takes to get us going. First half despair and booed off because of an abject, nothing performance, to the whole stadium behind them when they have a proper go in the second half.

Maybe the pennies dropped and he won't fk up so majorly again 🤣

No more first halfs like that again for the rest of the season please gaffer.

Moore is a terrible manager every club he had being at they all say the same just imagine if we had a manager who has more than a plan A and one that don't set his teams up defensively with this crop of players we would smash this league but yet again Moore has the handbrake on every single player I genuinely could do a better job than him

Again not sticking up for him last night at all as the first half was one of the worst i have seen and i have seen a lot BUT his stats etc say that he isn't a terrible manager boring style yes, terrible no not for me and you say imagine if we had a manager who had more than a plan A .... like who?? He did have a plan B and changed it at half time realising he had ballsed up big time and we were a million times better when attacking 2nd half(not hard i know) with a bit more luck regarding blocks and woodwork hit we could of got away with it 2nd half, sadly we didn't and he has got to put it right on Saturday.

One thing that has annoyed me is that DM didn't say he got it wrong, just be a man and hold your hands up

The Manager sat right in front of me in the summer and told me he wanted 100 goals and to play exciting attractive attacking football. It was clear in October that this was Spoofball with all the defensive formations and rotations.  He lost me and a few others in November. The style of football has been awful all season,  I really really hope that Port Vale get promoted but it might be by luck rather than good management. There were questions last year about training, tactics, fitness and stamina issues inside the squad . Other L2 teams look much fitter than us. Next 3 games are season defining and it's up to the players now because the Manager doesn't know what he's doing

He knows what he’s doing, not in the way he told us he would go about it.

We are organised and well drilled defensively, we usually look decent against a team who like to dominate the ball. We are a counter attacking team.

What he doesn’t know is how to do is attack teams who don’t come on to us

100 goals in a season….maybe in training 😂😂😂

I'm not digging anyone out but whoever said Darren was going to be poached next season was living in cloud cuckoo land I can only see The dog and duck being a viable option

That was me and i didn't say he would be poached,I said if he got us promoted then he COULD be if he continued to do well(his stock is still high with decent stats and that's a fact like it or not),look at Ainsworth helping to get Shrewsbury relegated and now poached despite a shocking record(and there was a clamour for him here as well)

I know people often clamber for a variation of 4-4-2 but we always struggle with just the 2 midfielders in there. A 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 doesn't have to be negative. Winning the midfield battle is half the battle. With the extra man in the middle second half, they could barely get out and turned over the ball constantly.

What worries me is that I, as an untrained coach, spotted that we were constantly a man short in midfield. After 10 minutes, you could see that a Barrow goal would be inevitable. We had no control over the game. A good manager would have seen his error straight away and either pulled Curtis back into midfield or better still made a sub. It was way too passive and was the worst thing you could do to go behind against a team like them who then shithoused for the entire 2nd half.

This isn't a time for worrying about hurting people's feelings. Just do what you need to do to win.

He doesn’t know what he’s doing he changed 4 players last night and 4 the better performing players.

he really doesn’t know what he’s doing.

I know a caveat is he came in mid-season to a relegation battle, but his win percentage is 33%, which isn't very good. He's lost more games than he's won.
