I think the key for next season is signing players who are on an upward trajectory rather than downwards which has been our problem in recent seasons. Signing players from league 1 and the Championship will be unaffordable with players who are likely less motivated than a top players in league 2 or below who can look forward to a decent pay rise from a lower starting point by signing for us. The problem we have is that too many players will be contracted on wages that they won't be able to demand elsewhere. Next season is going to be tough. I can see us having to consolidate by trying to stop the downward trajectory with the players we've got before rebuilding in 25/26. It's not going to be pretty for 12 months.

Gibbons released by Bristol. I think I would take him at this level. I’m not one for ex players, but I think he could be a real asset to us.

Not sure with him just because of his injury record.

He’s a solid player, can play right/left back/wing back and in a back 3 but also has that bit of grit/determination about him that we’ve really, really been missing. If we could get 30+ guaranteed games a season from him then it might be worth the risk but I just don’t think it is guaranteed.

Great player at league 2 level. The same scenario pops up tho, can he stay fit?

I’d definitely have Gibbons back, he offered a bit of fight and steel aswell as being good going forward, Gibbo & Clark as full backs would be an improvement on this seasons wing backs! Wouldn’t be surprised to see him end back at Cambridge though.

Showed nothing at all against us last week. Lost count of the number of times he ignored a run past our defender to the goal line and just passed it back.

No no no to gibbons. An average footballer with a poor injury record who has endeared himself to Vale fans because he is a local lad who likes a tackle and a fist pump to the crowd.

We're just not using him at what he's best at. Sounds a common theme at Vale Park right now. 

Also, I'm with @Brian Johnson I think (from what I've heard Moore is going to be given a lot more to play with in the budget.

He didn't do anything at Bristol either to be fair. I can't see him having the pace to run the channels effectively but my main issue with him is that he went to pieces most of the time when he received the ball at his feet in or around the box and fell over it more times than he got his shot off which says to me that he lacks composure. I can accept that confidence plays a big part there but I don't see him as first choice up top I think we need to bring in proven goal scorers, carol owes us that after the past two seasons, so I don't see him gaining any confidence sitting on the bench. I'd rather we had two half decent main strikers with dipepa and buah as two hungry youngsters with pace on the bench and maybe Uche to throw on to cause a bit of mayhem. Whichever way I look at it loft just hasn't shown enough to be first choice and I don't see what he offers from the bench. I want us to be at least challenging at the top end not seeking mid table safety and I think the lofts of this world are mid table at best.

So far, I have seen Vale fans suggesting that we should sign James Gibbons & Aidan Stone and the season only ended 5 days ago.

Probably referring to Capology.

Smith is leaving full time football. He won’t be signing in the EFL.
