"Doing well" is a matter of conjecture, in relation to, say Everton or Newcastle United then yes, we aren't doing well, however in relation to Tranmere or Newcastle Town we are doing well.
I will openly admit that with regards this season we aren't doing as well as we would have hoped and recruitment wasn't what we hoped for in January.
But you cannot force players to sign and its clear that the Uche deal to Charlton falling through almost certainly scuppered another deal going through.

I don’t think you’re far from the truth. Kennedy was the choice and set to be appointed then there was a change for whatever reason.
