It is without doubt that Wozza has been a magnificent servant for us.  He was offered a contract by Port Vale until he was age 34, he has another offer elsewhere to age 35.  We understand why he has gone for the additional security.  This does not seem to be about money, simply length of contract.  A club in our position cannot easily offer 2 year contracts to some of of that age I feel.  We know that when the inevitable physical decline sets in for footballers it can be rapid,

It is possible that Wozza may go on closer to 40, who knows, on a personal level I hope he does.

His replacement is already here, James Plant.  If Wozza had a 2 year contract with us it would mean  Planty being played out of position, or Wozza spending a bit more time on the bench.  It would certainly have the potential to hamper Planty's development and game time.

It is a difficult decision.  I am not necessarily a huge fan of Flitcroft, but for this one and for James Wilson, the longer term sustainability of Port Vale is important.

Like every Vale fan I thank Wozza for being a wonderful player for us.  He will always receive a huge welcome if he returns.  He leaves with his head held high, having delivered for us.

Yes, to be fair Cass and Forrester can play there as well. But they are defenders rather than guys who get goals and assists. Plant may be the solution.

Plant certainly needs to work on his defensive ability because Worrall did a lot to help out the defence which often didn’t get recognised. Worrall has been a great servant and Pope should thank him big time because without Worrall he would not have scored half the goals he did.
