Using public transport - that is mainly trains - I think very carefully about going to games and my safety. I decided it was not safe to go to Bolton because its inevitable I would be in amongst Bolton fans going back to Manchester or to Preston after the game travelling from Horwich. If I'd have been driving there would have been no issue at all parking outside the stadium.

I stayed over at Barnsley away and walked back to the town following the Port Vale mini bus in the midst of thousands of Barnsley supporters. That could have gone monumentally wrong for the mini bus at some grounds, but credit Barnsley's fans who I later had a drink with.

Of course passing through Crewe Station - a major interface - needs a bit of care, but is usually fine. The important thing is to wear and display PV clobber where it's safe to do so. But you know there is the unpredictable - for example you sit quietly in a coffee shop in say Hanley or Newcastle showing some signs of being Vale and some sort of nut Stoke fan takes random issue with you.

At my age I can't afford to get into altercations with much younger people. It's essential to be wary all the time.

Needs severe sentencing for anyone involved in this kind of mindless violent behaviour, football shouldn't be an excuse for fighting and violence.

Utterly pointless, and innocent or not in the incident this chap has paid the ultimate price and shows just how easily that kind happen if it gets out of hand or just bad luck from a fall/punch.

Seen the sad footage of this. The deceased is right at the front of the Blackpool lads getting stuck in. He's passed away due to the blow to his head when hitting the deck.

Very very sad but he was no Mother Theresa . However a real sad situation and a grieving family.

I have met many football fans of other clubs well away from football, and not one has come across as a <ovf censored>. Yet when together, the bellends come out.

Remember the Blackburn clown who 'headed' a bin at Stoke and had a heart attack. Darwin award right there.

I used to travel by train to home games from Leicestershire and away games but a couple of times I had fans giving me a hard time, one occasion after we'd beaten Darlington 3-1 at home I ended up in the rear driver cabin due to a load of their morons threatening and in the end it just got too much hassle so that made me in fairness take the plunge and learn to drive! (plus I can leave at 12:00 be at Vale for 1:45 and be home for half 6 rather than the 9:33 train there getting back 12 hours later!)

Don't get me wrong on the flip side I often sat chatting and drinking with fans coming Vale or going elsewhere and had good conversations about our teams, the way it should be but it just got too unpleasant and didn't need the anxiety of who's going to be on the train when I get on and how is it going to go.

I have smashed my head on a concrete floor fracturing my skull and damaging my brain resulting in permanent loss of the sense of smell. That was a 5 a side accident. Not recommended - so getting into fights where that stuff happens is very problematic.

This is a reason why I don't drive because other side effects arose in later life.

At Vale Park I guess it's logical trouble can happen outside the ground. But care is needed at Longport Station as well - like all intersecting railway stations on match days. I hasten to add I've seen no actual trouble there to date.

Until this season (when there hasn't been a SINGLE home game Saturday on which it's been possible for me to travel down from Edinburgh and back by train on the same day!) I've used Longport station regularly for more than 40  years. I've never seen any trouble there either, possibly because so few Vale fans use it. The station is unstaffed, of course, which wouldn't help if there were to be trouble. I have occasionally seen groups of away fans being 'escorted' down there by massed ranks of the constabulary.

Sometimes I'll walk to Stoke Station and catch the train there if time allows. That once went 'wrong' when I forgot that Stoke were playing at Derby and 800 of them arrived back on my platform on a special train. Time for a low profile and an example of why its usually unwise to visibly wear PV clobber away from the ground but in the locality. I regularly wear PV clobber on the Wirral and that leads to a bit of a chat now and again with Tranmere fans. But I'm Tranmere sympathetic anyway.

There aren’t many trains that stop at Longport now, the hourly Derby to Crewe trains don’t stop there now. Only the Crewe - Birmingham stops. The station is very quiet these days.
