I'd agree with all that @Guitar Ray There's also the work on the academy to try and develop/expand our own supply of youngsters too.

Indeed, the academy, the training ground and training facilities, recruitment of more support staff and increased investment in their departments.  The list goes on and on and, as we all know, it takes money.  Once everything is up to the desired level, OK we’ll still need to spend to keep it there,  there’ll be a bit more spare cash in the pot to invest on the playing side.

Joey Barton: Bristol Rovers manager targets eight signings after 'clearing the decks' -

Horrible horrible person.
Let's hope he gets prison time

Careful, you sound like RZ

In all seriousness, what's he done wrong here, apart from ship out players he doesn't want. I'm no Barton fan but this is no different to what DC did at the end of his first season. DC made numerous references to the lack of quality and the fact that he couldn't wait to get rid of some. And 90% of us agreed completely with him, quite rightly

I've made it known I don't like the way Barton thinks the way he does the job is the right way. Imagine being a player trying your best to get into the first team, then he releases a statement like this?

I'm sure I read 750000pa years ago. And yes gradi was rumoured to take a percentage

I got to know gradi through my job (up until it all came out and he was suspended) and he brought a young player called George nunn with him every week, think he was 14 at the time, now at Chelsea I think. Their relationship was like how you’d be with a new mrs flirty and weird. Anyway, he told me he got 20% of all Crewe transfers. He had a house full of pinball machines and pool tables for when the kids stopped over. Weird bloke. Wonder how George is doing. He didn’t pass the first trial but Dario told me he had a look at him a second time and signed him because he had good legs. Also told me having kids stop over was normal in the 80s and 90s and that the FA had it in for him because he didn’t take the England u21 job before he went to Crewe.

Nunn has just left Chelsea and signed for Derby.

Without wishing to cast any aspersions, stories like this make me feel sick.  When has it ever been “normal” for kids to stop the night with a single bloke?  I might be going out on a limb here but parents must take some responsibility.  Not a chance in hell I’d let my kids stay the night at the home of a teacher for example.

I think the promises of riches in football played a big part. He said half stopped at his and half at Bennells. Never mentioned this on here before but Dario told me the only thing he had done wrong was knowing benell was a wrong one and not do anything about it.

At one time Crwho we’re masters of this , with the amount of talent that went from their academy to the premier league , must have made an absolute fortune. Does makes you wonder though , where all that money went .  Gradi and Bowler ?

Well I would imagine the money went towards backing a championship/ league 1 Club in a sustainable manner unlike us who went into administration several times during the same time period despite having higher gates.

first time we have been in a higher league than Crewe for a while but don’t let’s kid ourselves their infa structure and youth development will see them back in league 1 within a year or two without any excessive spends on players … the challenge  for us is to still be in league 1 using a different strategy I.e . Buying players at the right price who haven’t made it elsewhere… but it’s hard to knock the way Crewe have done it over the past decade or so puts out failings into perspective
