Because the merchandise possibilities are endless in Asia and America etc.

Don't think Man Utd are a good example to use, nor any of the other big hitters .

As previously discussed Villa have played in front of bumper crowds at Shrewsbury and Walsall so are you suggesting those clubs had to pay Villa ?

Call me incredibly naive, stupid or both .

But surely to goodness you don't have to pay clubs to play you in a friendly ? Sounds absurd to me.

I presume if you do that Fleetwood and Bury was get two for a tenner

Surely the visiting club gets a share of the gate money, not a set fee?

darren1810   why do you think Manchester United tart themselves around Perth Australia playing friendly games etc,etc if not

for the money same with games in Japan or China or USA against no mark teams....there is money to be made in pre-season.

No, they do that to build a fanbase in those markets and to cater for the fans they already have there.

Maybe they get a small fee to enter the competition, but the big money for them, is in all the extra merchandise they can shift!

Agreed. Otherwise, we would get a fee for playing at Leek and Kidsgrove? If the logic is, that the highest ranked club, gets a fee from the lower ranked team, to just show up.

Never heard of that. Ever...

Wasn’t the Leek game as part payment for Trickett Smith.

Don’t know if it was part of the payment, as it’s very uncertain how much will be made from the game. These things are done ever so often. I remember Brondby got a friendly against Liverpool as part of the deal, when they bought Daniel Agger some years back. So it’s been done for a long time.
