Matchday Thread: Morecambe v Port Vale

If we are looking to progress I would expect a win from this one. They have been struggling lately despite there win at Chesterfield. I'd make just the one change for this by bringing in Tonge for Pugh to freshen it up a bit. As well as Pugh played is he able to play 2 games in a short space of time? I'm going for a 2-1 Vale win with Pope and a Smith header. UTV!

We need to start the game as we finished on Saturday, back to basics 4-4-2 system.

We looked ropey at times in the first half on Saturday like nothing had changed. We go the goal and seemed to give us a lift granted but looked far better when Barnett came on and we had 4 at the back as apposed to 5.

For me go,

Roos

Denton

Gibbons

Anderson

Smith or Gunning (maybe give Smith a rest)

Worral

Pugh / Tongue

Whitefield

Harness

Pope

Barnett

Think we did, Denton, Gibbons, Gunning, Smith , Anderson. That's 5 how I count them. I know we have the 2 wingbacks but stick Pugh in there as well and means we have 6 defensive minded players on the field, I would like to see the extra man upfront as proved in the 2nd half on Saturday.

We played with 4 at the back - Gibbons Anderson Smith Gunning. The full backs Gibbons and Gunning hardly went forward Saturday.

Denton was playing at left midfield with Worrall on the right and Pugh as the holding central midfielder. Denton is supposed to be playing as a winger in that formation.

No mate, we were playing with this same formation that we have been doing for the last month, 3 center half's and 2 wingbacks. Denton wasn't a winger! may have looked like he was as he was trying to get forward. Gibbons crossed for the first goal, as he was quite a way forward proving we were playing with wingbacks. I guess most will say we actually played 3 at the back and was an attacking option anyway, but I just think we need to stick to 442.

Sorry mate but we 100% changed formation on Saturday and played with 4 - 3 - 2 -1

Roos

Gibbons Anderson Smith Gunning

Worrall Pugh Denton

Harness Whitfield

Pope

The 2 full backs were not pushing on or overlapping the wingers much at all. Yes Gibbons made the first goal but he hardly got forward in comparison to the last few weeks when hes played as a wing back.

It wouldn't surprise me if we kept that formation for tomorrow.

Think the improvements in formation and personnel were down to the 11 v 11 games Aspo has been running in training. It's starting to show.

Absolutley. I suppose the benefit of having Denton on the pitch as a left winger is that they can also switch to a 3 at the back if needed. In fact other players like Worrall, Gibbons, Whitfield and Harness can also switch position if needed and give us more flexibility in what we can do formation wise.

Thats the way I saw it too although I was expecting 3-4-2-1 again.

The formation is clearly flexible. Whitfield was playing on the left for much of the second half and changed wings with Worrall for a time didn't he?

I was delighted - as Smithie will be - that we got behind the team and gave them a lot of vocal encouragement, Whitfield particularly in the second half when he was down by the paddock. It makes a huge difference. So many games we've played as if we're in church.

Sing your hearts out for the lads!
