New advertising guidelines

I feel sure everyone will welcome this progressive set of measures to stop gender stereotyping in advertising, another small yet significant victory for radical political correctness to stop bigots.

Amongst things likely to be considered 'problematic' under the new rules are-

•depicting family members creating a mess while a woman has sole responsibility for cleaning it up;

•suggesting a specific activity is inappropriate for boys because it is stereotypically associated with girls, or vice-versa;

•featuring a man trying and failing to undertake simple parental or household tasks.

Advertising

The ability to sell you something you dont want or need at a price you cant afford on the basis your life isnt perfect without it... or not as good as the many who have it.

I wonder how many kids are educated in the domestic necessities of life?

To me this just seems daft. Are people really offended by what they see in advertising?

Thanks my little poppet, I knew you'd be of some use to someone, somewhere (apart from Malaga) eventually. I won my bet !

I had a fiver wager with another poster saying that I could get someone to bite, and had someone else in mind - but the other person for all my dislike of his canine opinions he is certainly not gullible or stupid. :yes:

However, the campaign is totally genuine and I do agree with their priniples at least. So if you don't like it get back in the kitchen and do some ironing, and leave discussion of football to those who know best, you lazy trollopp :smile:

It's not just down to the situation ie women ironing etc. that stereotypes occur in advertisements, but also the accents of the actors or voice overs. For example if the product wants to be portrayed as honest/trustworthy, they use a Yorkshire accent as that is how Yorkshire people are perceived. Like that Broadband advert who's name escapes me. If they are portraying someone as stupid, they use a brummie accent as in the "we want to be together" ad from a few years ago. Scottish accent is handy if something is supposedly value for money etc etc. These are well acknowledged advertising techniques. Is this tack going to be banned also ?

Why should it be banned? It is you that is associating those accents with those traits. I don't.

Hopefully, yes, it can in some cases, if you are honest, be borderline racism.

I merely asked the question in light of the thread. Whether YOU personally associate these people with these traits is immaterial. The vast majority of the population do as you well know. And so do the advertisers. Whether they are accurate is another question.
