I guess there is some progress in these provisions. However, it does irritate me when the past adverts are castigated as inappropriate in the current context.

 

So the concept of the house wife was the way it was until this started to break down in the 1970's and 1980's. Also, it is absolutely clear to us in the mid and late 1980's that my wife would have to stay at home and bring up the kids whilst I went to work. There was not the type of child care provision there is now, there were no relatives to support us. And the vast majority of people I know from that time had exactly the same predicament. That being the case the adverts of that time which reflect an emphasis on women as mothers and home providers reflected the reality of that time. Also there were many women who wanted it exactly that way and were not looking for a career in the way men were.
