Realistic goals this season.

I'd be happy with playoffs, I reckon about 9th or 10th if I'm honest. Anything less than half way is extremely poor for Vale in the 4th tier for me.

Looking at the league generally it doesn't look overly strong it you take the clubs on face value/size(although obviously football isn't played on that). Swindon and Chesterfield are usually there or thereabouts at that level as mentioned and you'd expect Luton to challenge again as one of the bigger clubs. Coventry aren't going to keep getting it wrong despite their off the field issues and boycotts then you've got the likes of Carlisle, Exeter who I'd imagine will be at least top half. Mansfield look like they've come into some money and Steve Evans for all his faults isn't a bad manager and seems to motivate players wherever he goes. And you may get one of the minnows like Accrington, Morecambe or Crawley who will overachieve despite their crappy fanbases

Looking at the teams involved we absolutely must achieve top 7. When you consider our likely budget compared to others in the league and the experience we have already in the squad I would be disappointed with anything else.

How do you know what our budget is compared to others in the league?

The common problem we have had for many seasons now is the lack of goals from midfield. If we can solve that issue I believe we can challenge for the play-offs.

Mansfield,Luton,Lincoln and Exeter will be the ones to beat in my opinion.

Think Coventry will be up there to be honest, they finished strongly last season & their fans seem happy with the business they've done too. Robins has definitely steadied the ship, reckon they'll have play-offs in their sights at least.

Reckon Crewe might be a decent side too this year, top half at least.

Christ, talk about a small-time club & attitude.

Settling for Fourth Division football.

Stop the world, I want to get off!

I agree with the sentiment, we are traditionally a third tier club with occasional rises into second tier and falls down to the fourth.

The fans who say a top half finish would be ok (including me) are being realistic with what is being made available to us. Until and unless we get someone owning the club who will pump in more finance, get the ground finished, and fully utilise the assets we have (land, offices) then we can only progress at a slow pace, if at all.

Much will depend on who we sign in the next 4 weeks, how the squad can be made into an effective unit, but also the January transfer window - and not selling Nathan Smith anytime this season.

With 7 clubs having a chance of going up, I don't see why we can't be in the play-offs at least if we get just 3 more good players and a couple of promising loan players.

The big ones to watch next season in L2 are Notts County, came good at the end of last year. Coventry as well for me.

For once I agree with David above On the size(fanbase) and historical achievement you'd probably put Vale in joint 3rd or 4th place of the teams in League Two this coming season.

I'd only say Coventry and Luton are 'bigger' clubs than Vale. I'd probably then put us on a par with 5 or 6 other teams (Notts County, Swindon, Chesterfield, Grimsby and Carlisle maybe).

Lets be honest of the rest they have pretty much all spent their entire histories in the bottom 2 tiers or non-league which is why I take smithies point as well. As we know though there is a lot more to football than that!

We have 46 cup finals and we need play every one home and away like thats he case.

So we need to run harder than the opposition,be brave and throw ourselves at everything in both boxes .

Then u need quality to open teams up.

Realistically on the squad we have we r looking more down than up but football games aint won on names then r won with warriors.

I expect a really long run in both cups aswell as thats what attracts new support so the players will have to find something really specialwithin to meet my demands .

Promotion. League 1 makes it easier to get relegated with 4 down. League 2 makes it easier to get promoted. I think the extra place in League 2 helps offset the clubs that are out of place (Coventry) and / or have temporary access to a wealthy owner giving them inflated finances / performance. It leaves a gap for the 'normal' clubs who must thrive by good management.
