Port Vale manager Michael Brown has told the Sentinel that new signing Cristian “Monty” Montano will provide the right service for forward Tom Pope. Brown told the newspaper: “We will be looking forward to having ‘Monty’ down the left side, or coming in from the right. We will see where we feel his best position […]

More than one supplier is needed to feed the Pope and more than one striker is needed to be fed, so here's hoping that Eagles or A.N.Other is soon to sign along with the other striker. At the moment the total goals to be scored might be no better than what it was last season.

Pope's performances last season for Bury were below par and he was never in contention consistently. Just wondering which bright spark thinks that coming back to the Vale will spark off a huge vein of form when in his final months for us when he was here last time he was well below par in his scoring then.

But hey he gives it 100% because he's a Vale fan

Hopefully he will score if supply is good enough from the wings and midfield. Eagles showed last season what can be done from the wings and midfield, but the strikers were incapable of scoring due to confidence issues. They needed a second touch and the defenders would just clatter them and say thank you and good night all the time.

Looking forward to the wingers using the width and floating balls into the goal area again. Just hope the strikers are there to meet the balls and not flagging to keep up with the wingers.

Bringing Pope back to the football club is far more than simply on his playing ability.

He will set standards in the dressing room and in training.

He offers an emotional connection to the fans (which has/will paper over the cracks of division between club and fans caused by the owner)

He's a 'minor celebrity' in the city. Even Stoke fans, people who aren't that interested in football know who he is, and who he plays for. That's superb exposure for us as a club. It's fair to say that nobody other than a Vale fan would be able to name any of our other players at the moment.

And, he's still a decent enough player. Every other L2 club would take him in a heartbeat.

Welcome back, Popey.

We seem to have a talent for undervaluing goalscorer at Vale. Richards, Constantine and even Dodds (albeit to a lesser extent)

Popeyes a Vale fan, which means he'll put in as much as any of us would when he's wearing the shirt. That's why he does better for us than anyone else. And it's why he'll outperform most of the lower division mercenaries next season.

We have had plenty of good players over the years who have has 'emotional' ties to the fans...and put in more consistent performances. Shame Popey didn't show more loyalty when he was told to take a reasonable paycut

We need a team which bonds. I am hoping like every other Vale fan that he bangs them in but going off the last two seasons I feel it takes a very good team to build around him before he does anything. Bury had a reasonable side...what happened there?

What a load of old cods. Reasonable paycut ? You got the figures ?

Which other players had the same bond as Popey ? In recent years only perhaps Yates.

Or are you going to go back to Andy Porter and a few others from a long, long while ago.

A reasonable pay cut is fair enough but wasn't popes a huge cut?

He can be the most loyal player going but losing a huge %of his wage at that time of his career would have made no sense from his point of view.

What club asks their talisman to take a 60% pay cut? What do you think would happen if Barca offered Lionel Messi a 60% pay cut?

As for Pope last season, Bury had won 5 in 6 with Popey leading the line before he broke his ribs at Pboro in October. They then went onto gain just 2 points from the next 14 league matches. Seems like the loss of Popey hit them quite hard! Into the new year, James Vaughan was clearly the goalscorer there and Popey was very much deployed as the supporting striker - the battering ram who wins the first header, occupies the centre backs freeing Vaughan.

I think the move stems from a combination of Pope's desire to return and Bury's realisation that paying 3k/week to 31-year-old lower league strikers isn't the best way forward

Some good points...but when the season starts we will see a return to crossing high balls into the air again and the football will be thrown out the window to suit one player
