so your telling me if we were doing well in the championship, top four for example we wouldnt get 10,000, if not, we'd be close, there's a lot of stay away fan's for the simple 'cba' reason 'smurf said this and that, you all no it's true and just dont like it being said.
We would be likely to get 10k plus if in a top 4 position 2nd half of the season in the Championship, but a 10k average in a season is less likely. Depends a lot on visiting away fans, also a lot can happen in 2 or 3 seasons, I am always hopeful.

As has been said on many occasions the PR at the club is appalling. The recent signing of Smith sends out a really positive message but the way that Page was dealt with and the owners unnecessary comments regarding it, plus the club's lack of relationship with the local paper do not help at all.Last season some blamed the poor gates on the football played but this has been totally disproved this season because even with many new players and the team playing good football gates have continued to fall.

The people that aren't attending really are only having a negative affect on themselves, the atmosphere has been great and the chairman clearly doesn't need their money (however much he would like it).

Yes we would all love the stadium to be filled but the stay aways aren't having a negative affect.

if you think about it in a way REP, they are becoz this thread was started as a concern for poor home attendences, but as regards to results, they arent affecting anything, i just hope these stay away fans miss out and really regret there decision for being stubborn.

Im not sure what gates people expect... the only way to significantly increase gates on a consistent level is to attract new fans.... there are no hidden thousands in the wings waiting to come to vale park when X..Y.. or Z happens.

We may attract short term fans who will come when they fancy the particular games and away support will always push up the gate if they bring them.... but the hard core [which is what we need to address] wont fluctuate much unless we bring in new fans to compensate for the loss of the older fans and increase the base line number.

Thinking about it, the last time we were going for the top tier, and in the top 4, we played Wolves who were already sure of a Play off place. What did we do? We gave Hamil and the Bycars for away support, so limiting our support to about 10k for the Railway and Lorne St. needless to say we lost.

I remember a 20,000 gate when vale played Coventry.3-0 win if my memory is correct.
Nothing wrong with your memory, gate in 1959 was 20,916 when we increased our lead at the top of the 4th, but next season was down to 7686 in the 3rd. It carried on like that until 1964 for the visit of Jimmy Hill`s promotion team for a gate of 17,567.

There was also a crowd in 1959 of 20,524, just 5 days before against Crewe. They were heady days, Matthews was still at Blackpool, we were on the up.

Even though football was more affordable in those days, it was only the big games and away fans that boosted the gates.

My god Fosse 1959, 57 years ago, doesn't seem that long ago since we were top of the old 4th division, doesn't time fly when you're having fun.

Just got back home,

Nor sure if i,m pleased or dissapointed with that performance?

Need to be a bit more savvy away from home,

The next two home games should give us an indication in which way we are going?

I,ll be there to cheer the lads on and hopefully a crowd

average of around 5,000 + should help us on to achiving our goal for this season
