Realistic targets for next season

I would like Marshall to stay as he's tricky and gives 100% but the Leyton Orient radio commentary team got it spot on when they said during the game at Orient that much of Vale's play was going through Marshall but there wasn't much end product from him. He's not the best crosser of a ball and sometimes tries one trick too many.

Halle******lujah!!!!! His work rate is outstanding, faultless in fact. His end product is pretty much dreadful. He couldn't cross his legs never mind the ball. He's every bit replaceable as are the lot of them. We've lost our better players to better teams since 1876, it certainly isn't going to stop anytime soon.

I attended about 80% of matches last season and when I think back I can't remember much about him that mazy run/goal at home always comes in my head but after that there is not much but saying that I was leatheread most games

You are right, barry.

I too like Marshall and would like him to stay but his 'stats' are not as good as Myrie-Williams' when he was here! Cue - fire and brimstone reigning down on my head!

Marshall's work-rate is absolutely fantastic and that's what fans like and admire. But shouldn't we take work rate and effort for granted? It's just as much a reflection of how idle some of the others are that Marshall stands out. Although I wouldn't question the 100% effort of players like O'Connor, Dicko and Pope either. And Dodds put in a shift most of the time too.

Would a complete load of ****!!! He was along with Neal and oconnor our standout player!!! It's know wonder players aren't loyal anymore when fans don't give a **** either!

Couldn't cross his legs nevermind a ball? Got a fair few assists....

We have lost better players and will find replacements but your assessment of him is extremely harsh.

You are one of them that loves a headless chicken aren't you? Unfortunately headless chickens gets you nowhere. Only quality will see progression and sadly for all Marshalls effort, and there was plenty, there wasn't enough quality over the course of the season. There is better out there for money he thinks he's worth.

Got to agree. Fantastic effort poor end product. JMW had a poor cross but it is better than marshalls

The complete opposite actually. For me Marshall is a quality player and was throughout most of the season. I certainly wouldn't come close to calling him a headless chicken. The goal against Barnsley shows his quality, he was often marked by at least two players and was always our most dangerous player. I definitely think there was more than enough quality there for league 1, no question at all. A very good player and one that tries as well. He dosent think he's worth anything, he is clearly after as much as he can get after two years out.

Only quality will see progression, I agree. And every other position other than the goalkeeper should be strengthened before we look to improve on Marshall.

Think we over rely on playing an out and out winger personally I would be happier to see a more fluid forward line,

Its a problem when an out and out winger has an off day and easy for the opposition to mark him out of the game, our attacking opportunities are limited I would like us to try an alternative way of playing.

Well that was the great thing about the Guppy/Mccarthy era.....if one was off form, we had another threat.

We are/were one-sided with Marshall, whichever wing he played on. We could do with 2 wingers, and a target man either for them to feed with crosses or one who can hold the ball up well with his back to goal (I'm sure 23 other teams in our league say the same)!.

This is where I genuinely struggle to understand Ben Wiliamson's role. He's definitely no target man, he doesn't feed off Pope's knock-ons, he's not someone who can run at defenders and he is ineffective in the air from crosses. Any runs he makes are sideways and rarely produce any progress towards the goal.

Marshall is a good player and it's certainly not right to call him a "Headless chicken", he's way too skilful. I thought Page might have given him a few games as a free man upfront or playing off Popey but I guess Page was hampered with the injuries to Moore and needed to keep some width.
