Malaysian airliner crash

Feel for Malaysian Airlines, losing two 777s and 600 people In two of the highest profile accident s imaginable and looks like neither was their fault with one likely to be a suicide and one shot down.

RIP to all involved and hopefully whoever did it gets the full force of justice. Horrific and a war crime.

Pretty tragic seeing pictures of the plane taking off hours before and one of a chaps Facebook update about to board the doomed flight all excited with a picture.

Mental this can happen in 2014.

Ukrainian military SU25 aircraft cruise at FL150-170, certainly not the FL300+ that airliners cruise at

this is no accident

The missile system said to have shot the aircraft down is Russian military hardware called BUK. Not cheap portable stuff but heavy duty military gear. Had the Russians given it to the separatists than it's going to be more than an angry letter from the UN to Putin this time.

He's backtracking now.

Buk is the whole shebang, several vans with computers, big aerials for radar, another thing that fires the missiles, huge great complex of things.

It's not the same as arming a few local militia with machine guns - there would have had to have been very skilled, trained people at the controls who knew exactly what they were doing.

Ukraine also use Buk. One Russian news agency claimed it was an attempt to shoot down whatever Putin's private jet. With it all being radar based, presumably they can work out trajectory and find where it was fired from.

What we are seeing is that the traditionally dominant enforcers in diplomacy - the US, the UK and other EU countries have lost influence significantly. This is most obvious in the Middle East. It looks like Russian weapons have been used to shoot down this airliner. In the west weapons are sold to regimes that fall below our ethical / behavioural standards and get used to kill people. But downing an airline is much more high profile. It is likely the response will be to further sideline Russia but the danger with that is to push China and Russia closer together as a formidable block.

I never knew John Alder's name but I recognised him immediately on seeing his photograph. I have seen him at Newcastle games all over the place, including the most insignificant pre-season friendlies. Very sad indeed.
