I've only had high lane once. Must say, I wasn't massively impressed. Microwaved!!

The worst for going of Norton oatcakes! They put them in the plastic bags too early a and the condensation sends them west- a crime Povey's are sadly guilty of too. Saying that, the "works overtime" from Povey's on a Sunday morning is one of life's big treats

Used to travel from Warrington to get the Hamil Road oatcakes. Been using them for years when I didn't go to the one in Peacocks Hay, Tunstall. Perfect and done correctly by hand.

 

Povey's is just a commercial machine making them and their attitude in their stinks, and the worst ones I have had is Staffordshire Oatcakes which are basically cardboard all the time.

Think Neville took over from Mellors when they moved from Porthill to Clayton. As I recall, they use the same recipe. The shop at Porthill was still called Mellors the last time that I went there.

Spot on Jimmy, Nevs are tops, decent bloke too. Not too keen on High Lane especially if you have them filled as they're always done in the microwave:blink:

 

Did I ever mention that I helped to build the oatcake machine in both High Lane and Nevs place.................

Mellors in Porthill for me. Deserves a mention. Every time I'm back in the area I normally visit there.

 

Failing that then Oatcake Heaven in Newcastle.

As I was in Biddulph the other day I bought some Poveys. Now this is a shop I used to use all the time when I lived there, but they can't hold their own against High Lane oatcakes. Far too thick and rubbery.

 

The microwave debate is one that will rage on through the ages, and if pushed I prefer my filled oatcakes grilled, but for oatcakes alone, High Lane win, hands down.
