I remember a Sunday cup game v Scarborough approx 10 years ago when Sam Collins etc were at the club. Appalling freezing conditions and the FA cup draw was made at half time when either us or Scarborough would play Chelsea at home. We were shocking and lost 1-0.

Me memory's going, I recall hundreds off us Vale fans surrounding the ref and linesman as they discussed if they should allow a Vale goal or not!?.....:laugh:

Got it in one.

 

One of my mates, who was in earshot, heard the linesman (who had put his flag up then hurriedly took it down as the pitch was invaded) say 'I thought it was offside......but now I'm not sure'. Not surprisingly as he was surrounded by at least 200 Vale fans. Good job too as that made it 2-2 and gave us a replay. :laugh:

The old 'uns here might recall three games against the then non-league Wigan Athletic in 1969.

 

John James scored the last minute winner. Now there's a name from the past.

 

Wigan did not join the league until about 1980 and used to play at Springfield Park. I think I went on the train from Longport and paid 30p to get in. There were no penalties then, just replays. 1-1 away. 2-2 at home. Then 1-0 at Old Trafford.
