Astonishingly, it is only 50 years since Carlisle United played their sole season in the top flight, and now they are teetering above the Football League trapdoor.

After a few games they went top for a week I think.

True, just think it’s different with dropping into non league

Do you think the size of fan base should have a bearing on what division a club plays in ?

Absolutely not.

YES my bendy Spire mate,

BUT just 14 miles south of God's SHEFFIELD, you are POSSIBLY BIASED here??!!💯👌🤣🤣

Biased ? i have watched Chesterfield for 50 years now and i have seen us play Wednesday and Sheff united a lot of times in league matches in the 3rd tier and in that time we have the better record against both teams, i have seen Wednesdays gates drop to 10,000 and below. In the 50 years i have watched Chesterfield i would say with confidence both Sheffield clubs have had more relegations than we have had. In the 50 years i have watched my club we have had a little success - Anglo Scottish cup winners, FA cup semi Finalists, won the 3rd tier title 3 times( league 2 as we now Know it ) league 2 play off losing finalists, league 2 play off winners, league one play off losing semi finalists, national league play off losing semi finalists, national league play off losing finalists, national league winners, Johnstone paint trophy runners up, Johnstone paint trophy winners. you say i am biased its not because i am envious ov either club who has spent most of there football history fighting relegation.

I think the next step over the coming years will be evolving the National League to become the full EFL3 (fifth tier), with 4 up and 4 down with EFL2.

Though of course that just migrates the problem down a level, and there will still be proud former League clubs playing below the Football League's then four divisions (+ the Premiership).

I agree Alan.

It’s only a matter of time and really should have been done after Covid seasons with the financial problems the pyramid faced.

I think the game would also benefit from reduced number of teams in the league to make EFL Saturdays only and midweek for cup fixtures only.

If the EFL reduced teams to make fixtures Saturday only, wouldn't this reduce clubs yearly revenue ? and the players would still want paying the same wages

Have you ever come across a team called Stoke City ?

Gotta be post of the day, surely!!

I agree with your first point, can’t go along with your second.

There would have to be a ground and capacity requirement before the NL could become EFL3. I seem to remember at least one NL club being denied promotion on that basis.

As to numbers promoted/ relegated, the 4 up/4 down is a hangover from when the old Div 3 was regionalised, with North and South sections. There was 2 up/down from each, so 4 up from Div 4 was the logical conclusion. If the NL became EFL3, then it would make more sense for 3 up/down between L1 and L2, then 4 up/down between L2 and L3, with 2 each coming up from NLN and NLS.

I think 4 up 4 down for each of the EFL divisions remains correct.

Keeps the divisions dynamic.

There’s a case for fewer up and down between the NLN / NLS divisions and lower divisions.

footballers get paid a weekly, monthly wage which amounts to a yearly income. so your saying for eg - clubs incomes reduce players will accept less money and some would have to renegotiate contracts for this to happen

Slightly strange question but.......does anyone know how long after the final whistle it is before the full match is available to view on PVTV?

I completely forgot about Good Friday when my Missus made a medical appointment in March for April 18th, even though she pointed it out as she made it! I have the dilemma of hoping I'll be back for half time at the earliest OR avoiding all scores and watching the whole game later. The appointment is 2.15 UK time and is 40 mins drive away so even if she gets seen on time and we can get home right pronto I'm missing ko.

Decisions bloody decisions.......

If your good lady is able to drive, you can watch the start of the game on PVTV on the Port Vale app on your phone while you’re driving home.

Then switch over to PVTV on your computer / smart TV when you get home.

Spirite,

In relation to MBE’s second point -

I think the game would also benefit from reduced number of teams in the league to make EFL Saturdays only and midweek for cup fixtures only.”

- I’m saying that I don’t think it viable to do this when many EFL clubs are already struggling to pay their bills from the proceeds of 46-game season (+ cup games).

Neither do the PFA, reduce the number of matches reduce players pay.

No, but Carlisle are the only league team in a vast swathe of England (used to be Workington too) so to involve the whole country it would be good for them to be still there. Also, as several others have commented, it's a great place to visit.
