Carlisle Utd v Port Vale match thread - 18th April

I think the next step over the coming years will be evolving the National League to become the full EFL3 (fifth tier), with 4 up and 4 down with EFL2.

Though of course that just migrates the problem down a level, and there will still be proud former League clubs playing below the Football League's then four divisions (+ the Premiership).

There would have to be a ground and capacity requirement before the NL could become EFL3. I seem to remember at least one NL club being denied promotion on that basis.

As to numbers promoted/ relegated, the 4 up/4 down is a hangover from when the old Div 3 was regionalised, with North and South sections. There was 2 up/down from each, so 4 up from Div 4 was the logical conclusion. If the NL became EFL3, then it would make more sense for 3 up/down between L1 and L2, then 4 up/down between L2 and L3, with 2 each coming up from NLN and NLS.

Slightly strange question but.......does anyone know how long after the final whistle it is before the full match is available to view on PVTV?

I completely forgot about Good Friday when my Missus made a medical appointment in March for April 18th, even though she pointed it out as she made it! I have the dilemma of hoping I'll be back for half time at the earliest OR avoiding all scores and watching the whole game later. The appointment is 2.15 UK time and is 40 mins drive away so even if she gets seen on time and we can get home right pronto I'm missing ko.

Decisions bloody decisions.......

Will be a shame, not nice seeing sides like that with their fan base in non league whilst the likes of Salford are in the football league

Do you think the size of fan base should have a bearing on what division a club plays in ?

It’s usually on PVTV the following day, but you might want your missus to start it for you as they’ve been showing the score on full match replays for some reason.

EDIT:   I just checked and the score is not on the replay for the Bromley game,  but it is showing on the All Access above it as you scroll down , so beware.

 Bradford fans certainly do.

No fans worse than Sheffield Wednesday for thinking because they get big crowds they should be top 6 in premier league.

There are, they reside about 5 miles from Burslem, sorry, I guess you mean actual attendances, not tickets sold 😉

It used to be in the 40/50s, clubs relied purely on gate money,  maximum wage of about twice the working wage in all 4 divisions.  Times have changed.

Astonishingly, it is only 50 years since Carlisle United played their sole season in the top flight, and now they are teetering above the Football League trapdoor.

OMG....

I'm 63 and I remember THAT....👌❤️

Is there the money available to achieve that? I don't know much about non league but in my head I think of them largely being part time players playing in grounds that would need a lot of financial investment to reach league standard am I way off thinking that?

I suppose if the championship became premier league two that could lead to creating a new efl league with the more wealthy non league teams.

To a point yes , or the dilution of the EFL will continue , how do you do it though as promotion /relegation has to be merit based to keep sporting integrity , kind of a double edged sword .

No, but I don’t like seeing sides like yourselves and Carlisle languishing in non league whilst we play sides like Salford bringing 20 fans and having down right dreadful facilities.

problem with that is either us or yourself go into championship and teams like say Wednesday Birmingham Huddersfield are playing in league one we became the championships Salford
