I watched the JPT final and a few other L1 games this season, for me there is a gulf in class.

 

If you look at the teams finishing 12/13, so mid table the gap between league 1 and 2 isn't that big. Up until relatively recently sides often got automatic promotion with a little over 80 points. Over the last 10 season it's evolved until 90 points doesn't guarantee automatic promotion.  As the number of points available hasn't changed it means the gap in quality between a relatively small number of sides and the rest is getting bigger. I agree with your point about treading water but the number of sides treading water is bigger than your list. Quite a lot of the recently relegated sides run out of money after the one season Championship parachute payment has been used. If they don't get straight back they have a fall in income, lower quality recruitment,  leading to attendances dwindling back to a core support. Clubs like Blackpool are losing attending supporters quite quickly. 

I've just looked at Wycombe's and Orient's results. What they both did pretty well (besides thumping Stockport early season) is almost always getting a point and normally 3 points against teams of similar size. We aren't going to compete against next seasons Birmingham or Wrexham because the gulf will be massive.  Of course we might pull a shock. It's getting points and wins vs Rotherham,  Mansfield, Doncaster,  Burton etc. Two seasons ago if you did a mini league of the bottom 7 based on games between each other we were bottom. We didn't go down because we lost to Ipswich,  we went down because we lost to Fleetwood, Burton and Cheltenham (not an exhaustive list). None of those sides were a gulf in quantity to league 2.

You are forgetting the Darren Moore effect. It also depends how ambitious we are as we could push the boat out with a long contract.

Too often in our recent history the likes of Bolton, Pompey ,Sheff Wed have rolled into town and we've paid them way way too much respect and were beaten before we'd started. 

Hopefully our home form will be a solid foundation next season. 

Yes that's happened far too often for my liking in league 1 past campaigns ,yes I know there bigger in terms of fan base ,but you don't have to pay these sides that much respect ,you cannot even muster one on target home goal attempt .

DM has a lot of work to do .

The support has a lot of work to do also , there was more atmosphere v Bradford,on a tues night , than v Bromley /Grimsby /and Gillingham games put together with less folk there.

Mind you one was a routine win one was a last ditch equaliser ,and the last was a damp squib, when a goal for Vale could have got Doncaster fans restless and that may have spread to the team , but no Vale had already agreed to the runners up trophy by way team played .
