What an odd comment to make?

Personally I don’t care if our players are black, white, purple or bright green as long as they can play.  That also means I get most upset if people make racist comments about Vale or opposing players.

I thought the pattern he was referring to was the name Jordan.

To bring skin colour in, well that's staggering.

All the players who came in before are all black so far 😄 Though I’m sure it has nothing to do with our recruitment. just good to see how much more diverse our team is compared to last we went up too.

Think you should think again about comments, I am poor, but to post this ?

I think we are in a different position squad wise than when we last went up. Below is the retained list from DCs promotion year. How many of these players could we really say were up to the level? I'd argue Garrity, Smith and possibly Hall although he didn't show it much in the season after. We needed to build a first team that time around.

Compare that to this time, obviously we haven't seen them playing in L1 yet but I'd argue Clark, John, Byers, Garrity, Curtis, Tolaj, Croasdale, Walters, Shorrock, Hall, Debs and Headley should all be plenty good enough for a mid table league one push. Potentially add Amos and Stockley to that list although I think we will try to replace both with starters.

The recruitment team shouldn't really need to rip up the squad and start again, its more about building a bench and having depth. Gabriel in to push/cover Mitch, Gordon to push/cover Headley, Shipley to cover the 4 very good midfielders we've already got contracted, Rico to offer an attacking option off the bench if we are struggling to break a team down. Try and offload a few bits of deadwood like Hart and Hennegan and we should be good to go.

This is a really good point. So many of our squad the last time we went up had little to no experience at League One level, and some of those that did (Benning, Pett, Proctor etc) were either unsuccessful at that level or were injury prone.

IIRC We also lost/got rid of Covolan, Walker, Martin, Taylor and Hussey that summer, and signed some crap (Stevens, McCarron), pointless loan players (Small), and the only ones that could be called moderate successes were Forrester and Harrison.

Completely agree. The 20/21 side was incredibly fortunate to go up. We got already promoted Exeter last day who performed on a par to us against Gillingham this season, otherwise there would have been no playoffs.  Our best 2 attacking players were hung together by sticking plaster and prayers.  Both managed more starts that season than almost their entire careers before and their careers after. It was the least impressive of the 7 promotion teams I've watched and we found it impossible to improve.  Partly finances but also I think players in the game would have looked at our chances of survival as being poor. I'm not sure we have managed to significantly improve our starting 11 so far in the close season but the squad looks stronger already. Both 22/23 and 23/24 season if we'd had the same fortune with injuries as the promotion side we'd have finished mid table. It was the inability to cope with absences which almost relegated us in the first and did in the second.

I agree with that other than the Exeter bit. The title was in their hands, theirs to lose ,they took a 1 point lead going into the last game.

Our scenario v Gillingham was a totally different thing. Once it was clear Doncaster were 2 up the whole occasion became less frenetic.

Exeter away was a superb win against a team expecting the league title especially considering that FGR were away at Mansfield.

Team diversity is only important if referring to the ability to keep goal vs the ability to score goals, defend etc. 😀

Having players who can score from outside of the box is something Vale haven't had in abundance recently so this skill alone makes Shipley a worthy signing. Hope he scores some crackers for us.

I understand what you are saying but disagree with your opening salvo… no team is incredibly fortunate to go up….

All promotions are earned by the usual combinations of skill, courage, correct decision making, fortitude, flashes of brilliance and yes some luck… but no we weren’t incredibly fortunate it was an incredible effort by the team lead by a manager at his absolute peak dragging us up by our boot laces and 2 really skilled technicians up front.

we are in a different position now as the owner for whatever reason has decided to increase the amount she is making available to us to spend on both the playing side and the club infrastructure, I think there is a further infrastructure improvement to be announced sometime over the next couple of months also.
