He was the keeper when my dad started taking me to Vale in 1974/ 75, was my dad's favourite player along with 'nobby' Horton.

My first season too and he remains my favourite Vale keeper, really sad news. I remember him as guest on the Signal Jonny Owen Friday night show, early Noughties I think. I rang in to ask him about the Walsall goal and he was talking about it for ages saying Vale fans around the World that he'd met since, always asked him about it. He made many a good save and as others have said, had good command of the penalty area. Perhaps not quite the finest I've seen in a Vale shirt but still my favourite.

He got a lot of stick for that goal, I remember as we walked out he was exchanging views with a supporter in the paddock, although losing to Walsall was/is a given, the heated conversation was quite funny and he gave as good as he got.

Great keeper. I vaguely remember Boswell but Connaughton was a different class when we first signed him.

My Grandad walked me up to the Vale from Stanfields one day to collect some autographs. We went into the changing rooms after training. John Connaughton dropped my autograph book onto the muddy floor! Lovely fella though. I was also surprised to see him wearing spectacles…I’m pretty sure I’ve remembered this correctly.
