Port Vale press clippings – how the national press viewed the 1994 FA Cup win over Southampton

Often forgotten amongst the glory matches of Spurs and Everton, the FA Cup win over Southampton is relatively unsung but remains a fine performance by John Rudge’s side. Our thanks to Vale fan Ken Grocott for the press cuttings. You can click on each image for a larger version.

Apart from the horrendous tackle by Widdrington a big memory from this was when the official attendance was announced over the tannoy .

Cue hilarious laughter in the stadium. Billy Bell special.

Think you could be mistaken darren, that was the Arsenal game when a crowd of 14,000 was announced there was at least 20,000 in the ground.

Was in the Hamil End that night, as it was given over to Vale fans for that match (for possibly the only time in recent history?)

Was a great view and mental when Bernie scored the only goal at that end.

Southampton fans were put in the end (old block C?) of the Railway Stand.

Another great FA Cup night at Vale Park.

Darren, I was in the Lorne St, near the tunnel and as well as verbal abuse Vale fans were spitting at Widdrington because of the tackle. I was really surprised when he later came to play for us, but I’m glad that he did. Well done Tommy for forgiving the fans and thanks for playing for us.

I'm sure similar happened v Southampton because the Hamil end was rammed and they brought maybe 500 in the Railway stand.

The Southampton gate was 12'000. Which considering there were 4000 in the Hamil was indeed another Bell masterstroke.

I'm possibly mistaken as you say but more than likely the combined Arsenal and Southampton attendance of 26'000 were shall we say ' engineered ' .
