The first choice for PM in 1940 was not Churchill. Chamberlain didn't want him. The King didn't want him and the only reason he became PM was because Lord Halifax didn't want the job despite being urged to take it.

If you enjoy "alternative history" books, Dominion by C J Samson is worth a read. The basic premise is Lord Halifax becomes PM in 1940 instead of Churchill and Britain becomes a satellite state of Nazi Germany.

Johnson looks like he’ll be going back to the Tower.

Aup Howj, will he become the 8th raven

It is said that the kingdom and the Tower of London will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the fortress. There are seven ravens at the Tower today — the required six, plus one spare!

I thought that no one wanted Halifax because he was pro Nazi.

Anyway, it doesn't matter as to the current situation - the Tories need someone to get them out of the mess they're in, and most of the candidates for leader are too close to the Leave campaign to be even handed.

I'm not seriously suggesting Heseltine by the way; he's too close to Remain as well as being past it, but they need an honest broker who can look at the problem objectively and lead us to a solution. The trouble is they're rather thin on the ground.

Halifax was originally an appeaser but after the Sudeten crisis he changed his mind. He was also concerned that as a member of the House of Lords he would be outside the circus - the King was prepared to suspend his peerage though.

I've read all of CJ Sansom's books apart from his latest, Tombland, which I'm saving for my holiday. We should start a Good Book thread on here somewhere instead of all this political crap!
