Notre Dame de Paris

My favourite bit of Paris is that bit around Notre Dame, Cité, Pont au Change, Fontaine de Saint-Michel. If you know, you know. That’s where I go to in my mind’s eye when I think of Paris.

Last time I went there I got off the train at Notre Dame Saint Michel and it’s just there isn’t it. You get off the RER, walk up the steps and you can’t miss it. It was a beautiful sight in the early October sunshine, spoilt only by a bloke in a West Brom top walking past.

I’ve been to Paris many times Santa, mainly in October for the racing at Longchamps.First port of call is always Notre Dame. The heart of the most beautiful city in the world imo.

Don't see what the fuss is about..... it's a building.... wasn't it insured?

I've no idea in this case but often it's next to impossible to obtain cover for historic buildings with a major wooden component. Insurers insist on defence systems such as sprinklers which would be difficult, if not impossible, to put into a building 850 years old without some visible alterations in what is after all a UNESCO world heritage site. As to the impact, well imagine how we'd react if something similar happened to Westminster Abbey.

Compromises can be and are made - after all, it wasn't built with an electrical installation in mind, which it has now - but it has out of necessity to be put to a cost benefit analysis. I'm sure this will take place during the rebuilding.

Is insurance economic? If you have a large portfolio of buildings is it not economic to bear the risk instead of paying someone to do it? We don't know the cause of the fire, was the building work a factor.

If they find the cause was the building works I would imagine there's at least one contractor - and their insurers - sweating now.
