Coventry win City of Culture

Really thought we were going to win.

I thinks a five town city was undeliverable, with perceived culture too far apart and sporadic.Just think what a better position we would have been in with a five town connected tram system, linear in layout and easily accessible. Very deliverable..Just wait till the snow arrives this weekend and our very limited, outdated connecting road arteries are clogged up.

Respect to all those who worked on the project, but this city will never move on until its own people move on. The disjointed 'six towns' mentality is what holds back the city and its obsession with the past instead of forging a future.

How can somewhere like Stoke win recognition for culture, when it lacks the most basic of cultural and social amenities/venues. Swimming pools closed, sporting venues closed, no notable concert venues, crippling transport links etc, etc..

Stoke must be one of the only cities in the UK where no other professional sports other than football can be viewed, whilst other cities and even towns have pro rugby, cricket, basketball, ice-hockey, cycling, athletics, swimming teams and venues as their choice. We have nothing.

The area has been a hot-bed for champion darts players, but we have no venue suitable to attract competitions. The area has strong links with famous musicians, yet our lack of a modern arena facility means current artists/groups never visit the city.

I think it's quite depressing, where on earth will S-O-T get any inward investment from now, without Government help ?

Having 6 towns and 6 town halls spread out over a large distance makes it difficult to get any cohesive plan in place

Very sad.

It needs to invest in a modern arena facility that can be used to attract sports, music, exhibitions etc. In turn this will attract restaurants, bars, hotels and visitors. I know this sounds simple but until we take the plunge and do something like this, then nothing will happen. If we continue to waste money on sculptures and white-elephants such as ceramica then we will remain in the shadows.

Our obsession with our past can also be cringeworthy. Most of the old potbanks need demolition not restoration. Sadly, nobody really cares anymore about our history, which for those who actually worked in the factories instead of just writing about them, was far from glamorous. I'm not saying we abandon and forget our industry, but we simply must move on.

Our geographic location and low-pay wages should make this area a real attraction to all types of sectors, yet we continually 'mess' things up when it comes to attracting investment - why?

Can always recall the slightly inhebriated homeless chap outside Wembley Stadium before the 1993 Play-Off Final v West Brom. " Stoke -on-Trent live in a tent." he bellowed out in proper Cockney as my Dad and I walked up Wembley Way. He had a point. Culture for some in this city is not drinking their night's worth of ale out of a can but pouring it into a Port Vale / Stoke City mug...

Don’t belittle Stoke - it’s famous for producing some of the most wonderful ceramics in history whilst Coventry is famous for being bombed!

The problem is nobody cares about these ceramics any more. If people did care or valued our products then we wouldn’t live a city littered with depressing dereliction. They were great products, but demand moves on but our city hasn’t, this is the problem.

You seem to have overlooked the fact that Coventry made the first British motor car and built up an industry that the Luftwaffe felt worthy of their bombs. Even when Coventry was bombed it stilled looked a lot easier on the eye than the bulk of our current surroundings.

I can't disagree with some of what you say VS and I think the city has been dreadfully let down by its city leaders. There was a letter in the Sentinel the other day about how our transport network is so last century compared to forward looking cities like Nottingham. Also, when is someone going to do something about that derelict Twyfords building next to the D Road? Anyone visiting the city for the first time must be appalled by the sight coming down the D Road.

Stoke still looks like it has been bombed!

The German bombers probably flew straight over Stoke thinking it had already been struck.

According to the news the judges said that " Coventry has constantly reinvented itself" I'm afraid the same cant be said of Stoke.
