It was one of the largest employers in the area some time ago... you may know a very small part of it now as festival park... shelton iron and steel... it covered a huge area [400 acres?] of stoke on trent...

My dad used to work there. Ran along where the A500 is opposite Wolstanton retail park and covered all the Festival Park site and was linked as far up as Smallthorne and Hanley Forest Park. Some of the old photos that you can find of that era look like something from another planet.

Used to be a level crossing near where the roundabout at festival park is, a guy used to wind the gates out by hand when the engines needed to cross... had blast furnaces, rolling mills, coke ovens mines [at one time] its own railway etc etc etc.

When they turned out the furnaces at night the sky used to light up with an orange glow... the plate layers used to repair/maintain the railroad and lay new... and were called out at any time if an engine or its load came off the track... seen many an accident and a few loud bangs when the molten metal spilled and hit a patch of water.

 

But we digress.. off topic..

Just read the timeline from the link I found. I remember whilst being very young the selection on the garden festival site in ‘86 but can’t for the life of me remember what it looked like previously.
