Vale played their first away game against Middlesbrough at Hartlepool because the Smoggies were locked out of Ayresome Park. A 2-2 draw and a memorable day - if only I'd been there Gerard! ;)

Remember it well Jean.Saturday night,Hartlepool played Cardiff in the afternoon.On my way to Scotland for a holiday ,went to the match,about 100 Vale fans there .Grewy's debut aswell I think.

Spoke to a copper before the game,he was dreading it.Driving away from the ground we got mooned by 4 lads on the back seats of a bus.:D

It was strange playing them at the then Victoria Ground as Middlesboro' had played Stoke at Vale park a few years earlier!

I was there. 2-0 down in rapid time, but Boro tired in the second half and in the end Vale could and should have won it.

 

Their fans were walking from their section into ours and congregating behind us and it looked certain to kick off, but thankfully the stewards and police sorted it out.
