It was strange playing them at the then Victoria Ground as Middlesboro' had played Stoke at Vale park a few years earlier!

Wasn't that down to one of the roofs at the Victoria Ground being damaged in some wind gust. I used to live in Stanfield Road as a kid and was told to keep well away from the ground that day as it was meant to packed at Vale. I did go for a sneaky look by the church.

What was the attendance at Vale that day?

Yes the wind had blown half the Butler Street Stand roof off, well thats what Stoke say i reckon the times Denis Smith kicked the ball in the Stand was the cause by him losing the bolts.........19000 i think.......

21,007 official. I stood on the hamil, no segregation. Stoke played a practice game on our pitch beforehand and denis smith put our keeper out for a month. Then they refused to lend us a reserve. Thanks for that.

Smithy must have gone soft if he played again after only a month!

Paid extra to go in the main stand and sat at the back thinking we'd be safe - their mob came and stood behind us in the gap between the seats and the wall - it didn't kick off until Vale equalised! I didn't think I'd get out alive - night on the ale in Scarborough after - happy days!

I was there...went in minibus and only found on the game was definately on half way through the journey. Boro were 2-0 up I think, then tired and we came back to 2-2. Sure Richard O'kelly scored one. Also managed to see the last 10 mins of Hartlepools game (against Cardiff I think) before the Vale game

I remember it well, I was living in Cumbria and played for a Carlisle team at Silloth Town, we lost 4-0,then went into the bar for the results, lots of Carlisle, Sunderland, |Newcastle and Middlesborough fans there, only one Val fan oddly enough

Nice area we used to go to allonby quite regularly.
