Tax credits - congratulations to the House of Lords

What about when people's circumstances change? That's when the safety net - the one that the tories are so intent on dismantling - is so important. I'm not exaggerating or being overly dramatic when I state that the way that vital services and provisions are being shut down or withdrawn is genuinely frightening.

A safety net it should be... but nothing more

People shouldnt have children they cant afford and expect someone else to foot the bill.

Its a problem with no sensible answer... if the limit is set to what people need to survive then the minimum wage should reflect that limit by exceeding it.

it is for me an interesting point..that perhaps the right thing has been done but not by those that should be doing it..i.e I'm glad that this is being revisited but it should have been the Commons that caused that to happen not the Lords

The commons has said, on three occasions, that it is the right thing to do... whether we agree with it personally or not.

Correct JA,can you please inform the resident tool of that.If the Commons go one way or the other, that's where it stops.Someone has asked ,what is the point of the H of L?If the Lords overrule everything what is the point of the elected House of Commons. As it stands the Lords are the opposition party.

Labour need commending for the way that they have conducted themselves throughout this whole disgusting affair, what with McDonnell promising not to attack Osbourne if he u-turns on this issue.

It's worrying how the tories will fund the huge hole in their plans now. I'm sure they'll find another way for the poorest to bear the brunt though.

Not the issue here.****ing tripe as usual.

I'm glad that it's been halted/paused but not glad about how it's been halted/paused..the end does not always justify the means

Surely in this case it does? Even tory mps have expressed their dismay at these cuts (albeit maybe due to 71 of them being at risk of losing their seats due to this) and it really does need looking at again.

Again though, I'm sure Osbourne will go looking elsewhere to make up the shortfall if these don't go ahead.

I can't understand why more isn't being made of the fact that in the build up to the election, they implicitly stated that they would not cut tax credits. Less than six months later, they're doing just that. McDonnell changing his mind on voting for that fiscal charter thing was lead news on most channels/ papers but there's been very little on this.

They are filling their boots now ,just after the Chancellor has said he will look at it.People should look and listen instead of sounding off.

I also believe it needs looking at again but for me there are also wider issues. This suggests that if the Commons votes to do something that it's OK for a small but powerful minority to overturn/halt what they have decided upon...that's a potentially dangerous situation whichever side you agree with

Autumn statement will possibly included something short term that doesn't need to go to the Lords..to make up the shortfall and to send a message to the Lords

Again, correct JA,as stated today.Lets get one thing correct, the changes are on the horizon and not next week.

The argument would probably be.... the amount given in other areas... living wage/tax allowances/etc... would mean tax credit payments arent being cut in real terms, just moved to another area.
