I doubt that his footballing contribution will assist the team to attaining a top six L1 position.

If I was Smurf I would be fuming at Page for wasting money and banging my head against the wall in disgust.

It is obvious from comments made that Chris Birchall is not on a big wage, and will not eat away much of Vale's resources. He probably also knows that he will not be a regular starter, but has the experience if used properly to make a useful contribution in the coming season.

I'd like to wish him well, and hope that he chips in with a couple or a few important goals and continues to serve us and enjoy his football as a Vale squad player. The club needs a small number of steady reliable squad players who are willing to play their part even if they are not the main act as they once were.

Doesn't set the world on fire, but he's the type of player who will sit in a role and do what the manager asks him to do. One nil up at Rochdale he will come on and tuck in and make sure a team remains solid. The fact he only has a one year contract and is on significantly reduced wages says he isn't viewed as a regular starter. He does offer cover all across the midfield. I'd be disappointed if I thought the team was being built around him, but its not and with our budget we need a few players of his ilk. Plus the experience of playing with the likes of Beckham may well help the younger players. In a squad of 20 -22 there will always be bench warmers, decent players in div 1 are on £70k plus and strikers significantly more. Birchall will be on a lot less and he doesn't inspire or play great games but he's reasonably solid when he does play. Think he's marginally stronger in centre midfield than on the wing as he's lost his pace but does cover a fair amount of ground when he is played.

If he only signed on Thursday morning the contract should have been withdrawn when he threw his toys out of his pram earlier.

With the new signings and Michael O Connor signing the best he can hope for is a place on the bench. His wages would have been better spent to sign a useful youngster for the future. As he,s Rob Pages love child is the only reason he,s been offered a contract then to turn round and bite the hand that feeds him by criticising his offer which obviously reflects his value to the club. Hope you manage to convince the fans that you are worth a contract Chris after your outburst because your life will be hell if you don't.
