Fair play to Smurf! Really hope the fans back him now, but just can't see 6000 for the gillingham or peterborough game.

I agree it's a big ask for both Gillingham & Peterbourough game's.A good distance to travel, expensive time of the year (away fan's won't bring many). But still a good call from Smurf and all the more reason for more Vale fan's to turn up.

Nearly 20,000 saw those 3 games last season Melv.Gills may be a struggle to get above 5000 but I think Peterborough will bring a few and the Railway Children may be allowed out by their mums.Looks a probable to average over 6000.

That might very well be the case. But at a different time of the year.Christmas will have been an expensive time for most people.Add to that a lot will now not be paid again till end of Jan.

I dont think the core support will increase much, it will take time to get people in, its no use thinking people are just staying away.

If we get into a position to challenge for a promotion place it will increase or if we get a big opponent [one who have a good traveling support]... It takes time to build core support and good performances, not necessarily good results although that helps and a hell of a lot of off field activity and dedication... after 10 years+ of dismal decline a few quid on maybes wont do it... the people arent just sitting outside waiting to come in on a saturday... whatever the reasons people stopped attending you have to give them 200% more to make them even consider coming back and offering to fund a couple of players, especially when we have had a shed load we havent even seen, just wont do it.

6000 for next season is a possibility... if we get the season ticket campaign and PR right... but this season? with cold weather and tuesday night games on the horizon?

Exactly. You need 20 plus years playing at a higher level (Prem or Championship) before you can build traditional support. Look at Stoke; their gates were not much better than Vale's until they got into Div 1 in the 60s. For the majority of seasons since they have been in a higher league than Vale; consequently they have enjoyed the lion's share of traditional support. To turn that round would need Vale to have their best spell ever and Stoke to have a disaster.

Apologies for mentioning Stoke so aften, but they are really the elephant in the room when it comes to how well or badly off we are for attendances.
