It seems inconceivable in these times of CCTV etc but taking the home end used to be the way to go.

There used to be proper loons following Vale in those days (not like the gesticulate-and-run mugs you see nowadays).

It was pretty routine at away matches to see the home end separate as fighting broke out, started by Vale nutters going in the home end.

In those days, they were turfed out, escorted round the pitch and put in with the Vale fans....usually to loud cheering as if welcoming gladiators back from battle.

I was lucky/scared enough to never ever get caught up in it, although I got legged through Wrexham one year.

You jus't cant get a decent hooligan these days. I blame the Poles.

Good little player, good news.

As much as I hate him, with McCombe and Duffy out, I wish that Artell was still around at this moment in time. Davis is very much a work in progress and Gareth Owen every bit a Sunday league player these days.

Wasn't old enough to comment on the Vale away day antics from the 1970s and 80s etc.

However it would be wrong to assume that when the Vale 'hoolies' turn up for certain away days; it's simply full of full of kids who gesticulate and run a mile as you suggest. There are some of them, but not all.

I've seen old grown men at away days who still give it the big un and up for a scrap, who certainly don't run a mile. Wrexham, Bury, Shrewsbury, Stockport, Crewe, Chesterfield etc in the last 6-8 years as examples.

6 of us once went in the aldershot home end singing vale songs, the home crowd just parted and let us through.

we spent the whole game stood in the middle of their end.
