We are a club with a squad of players full of riches.

Visiting 4th division teams coming to Vale Park should be quaking in their boots. overawed by the stadium, the pitch, and a vociferous crowd.

That's how it should be!

But it isn't, because we have a Manager whose football is incredibly negative, dour and boring.

To line up with a bank of 5 at the back. With 2 midfielders sitting 2 yards in front of them (one of whom is our top scorer).

Why oh why can't we 'get at' teams from the off.

Why can't the ball go forward right from the kick off.

Why can't we just put it into touch around their corner flag and press up onto them so they, not us, are under pressure from our kick off!

Donny fans were 100% right DMs football is 100% <ovf censored>.

I want a team of nasty footballers who kick, niggle, and get right in the face of the opposition and win the battle first, the war second.

I am sick to the back teeth of opposition fans celebrating at Vale Park.

Perhaps we are too nice as a football club and that is the attitude that gets carried onto the pitch.

Spot on.

Back to the gym for me and swim on Saturday afternoons.

I enjoy thst I don't enjoy Vale losing I'd rather not know.

A very disappointing afternoon yer again .

We are too nice it doesn't work .

How many home defeats is that .

24 in 47 games

Why do our fans have little to celebrate .

The equalising goal should have set us up replacing Curtis at half time was bizarre it gave them a lift then first attack who scores who else Billy Sharp he always scores v Vale .

Then we concede a ridiculous third goal.

Time for work let's hope everyone works as a team at my place tonight .

Ripley if you reading this what's with the long ball to Paton, and if you Moore have instructed him do that you want a good hiding

Having digested the game, and reflected on the start to the season, my major bones of contention are:

- 3 at the back. We don’t have the players for it - you need some pace in the centre backs and Duracell bunny wing backs who run all day. We don’t have them. We concede an alarming amount of “easy” goals from simply balls in behind or down the channel between wing back and centre back.

- Lack of width high up the pitch and a lack of crosses. Aligned to the above we lack width in the final third and don’t put enough quality crosses into the box. Most weekends if you watch highlight shows a substantial proportion of goals will come from crosses into the box.

- Lack of midfield control - Garrity is rightly a fan favourite for his workrate and goals. But he does not work in a midfield two. In fact I’m not sure any of our midfielders do. We need an extra body in that midfield.

As has been pointed out by others, it screams 4-2-3-1 as the way forward. Keep a nice solid back four and reduce the gaps in the channel and behind. Add another midfielder ahead of the 2 to gain more control in the middle. Play two wide men to provide service into the box and a threat out wide.

We have the players to make that system work. The challenge is that we don’t appear to have the manager to make it work.

Personally, for Newport, I would look at the following:

               Ripley

John Heneghan Hall Hart

       Croasdale Byers

Benecio   Chislett  Curtis

             Stockley

Hart's hamstring fully went for the third. Won't be seeing him for a while.

In addition, you can give a cook fairly cheap and cheerful ingredients, but with a bit of knowhow they can rustle up a really nice meal.

I have waited for the highlights before commenting to try and review what I saw on the pitch…

I’d use the word “disjointed” largely, early doors a lot of sloppy play at times but until the goal we looked comfortable, I really liked the look of Cover who was causing their 27 all sorts of problems, didn’t expect him to have the pace and power that he had as a wide player considering he’s meant to be a central defensive midfielder isn’t he? That said for as vulnerable as their 27 looked against him we seemed to focus more on the left side despite the relative joy we got.

First goal I thought was a great ball, although seeing it back it’s just put into a good area and we really shouldn’t be opened up like that, better finish than I thought in the ground but how we became so open there is unforgivable… more on that second half!

was worried we’d collapse like previous and the missed header let us off but we seemed to score from nothing, good battling from Tolaj, then gets it back and threads a lovely ball to Croasdale and smart finish, good footballing goal, seemed to be on top then

Second half yet again a bad start, again far to open on the break, Ripley great stop but slow to react to the parry and Hall I think it is runs in beyond Sharp rather than try and block the cut across which goes just behind him, then we did collapse and they had a couple of half chances before yet again cut open with a high line, watching it back it is worryingly bad, end up two v one but a massive gap to thread it through. This is a pass made almost on the touch line on half way.

Benicio was a bright spark, again their 27 was in circles trying to deal with him and he did get balls in, his delivery was good, correct penalty decision and looking at it could of nicked a point with the header back luckily down the keepers throat but if we set up like that earlier we may be talking about a different result.

whilst a lot of negatives we could of had 4 or 5 today, one off the line, two scored, the Hall header should of done better, the almost last gasp og but it does seem when we chase a game we just end up with huge holes at the back, three at the back just doesn’t work, especially at Vale Park, too slow, we have to get a flat back four, we have to try and accommodate BBB who looks a real threat.

4-2-3-1 would probably be our best bet with what we have, Byers in with Croasdale to control the middle and Garrity further forward.

We probably have the biggest budget in the league, certainly one of so no excuses for Moore, not time to panic just yet but he has to start getting results soon.

I think I’ve only missed one home game in 2024… Bristol Rovers when away on holiday… it’s going to be at least mid September before I see them win if not later this calendar year on our home turf… that itself if disgraceful… lucky I was at Burton Away but that’s 1 win in 9 months plus… madness.

I do think we need to have quite a tricky conversation about Ben Garrity. Very controversial view to come.

He's great at what he does - a Vale icon, for sure - but he's good at so few things (and bad at quite a few too) he has to be played in an extremely specific way (as a number 10 with no responsibilities in possession) that you have to sort of shoehorn the entire team around him. You sort of have to ignore him in possession, which is crackers.

The controversial view is that Chislett scores about the same number of goals but offers a lot more on the ball.

I love Ben. A proper fighter, one of our hardest working ever, and 10-12 goals is never to be dismissed, but we can't keep playing players if they unbalance the team. We have to play with a number 10 role, and effectively guarantee him that spot, if he's going to be successful, when there's every argument that Chislett is more effective in that very same position.

Agreed. Curtis, Garrity and Chislett don’t fit in the same 11. One, if not two has to be left out each week.

It’s just all a big headache at the minute.

Are we playing 5-4-1?  3-4-2-1?  3-4-3? Pick some other numbers?  And if you honestly think Moore is telling the players “just to stay in games” then you’re either on the same dust as Spunkers or thick as pig💩

Are you part of the coaching set up now ?

I don't think we're negative through instruction. It's not often a manager will explicitly tell the players to not attack. Formations ("we played a 343 today") are misnomers as we'll have different shapes when we have the ball and when we don't. It wasn't to do with intention.

We were out-pressed and could never have any decent possession. The one time we did, Tolaj threaded it through for a midfield runner.

I think in theory Cover and Hart were to play high and wide, in line with the front 3 (with Tolaj and Curtis cutting inside), to give us a back 3, middle 2, and front 5 - which is what every successful team does with the ball.

For that to happen, you need to have sustained spells on the ball (playing out of the opposition press) and also be able to press the opposition to win the ball back in dangerous areas.

Issue was today that we couldn't build, the wing-backs couldn't get up the pitch as we were often on the back foot, and when we did get the ball we had no technical quality, anywhere, compounded by the midfield being 3 v 2 (or 1 when Garrity drifted elsewhere) pretty much every time they won it back.

It was just incredibly crap in every way. The idea was rubbish, the execution was worse, the in-game adjustments a disaster. Those 90 minutes were enough to convince me that he tactically doesn't have a clue what he's doing and we're now reliant on individual talent and good vibes - we can beat the crap teams but against decent sides like Barrow and Doncaster are going to lead to defeat. Doncaster have an excellent player in Molyneux, but the key difference today is that they very extremely well organised both without the ball and on the break.

Formations :

If your two wing backs are Smith and Hart - we are playing 5  3  2

If your two wing backs are Tolaj and Curtis - we are playing 3 5 2

Doesnt matter what tactics you discuss. Players will do their best with the strengths they have.

Why two defensive midfield players though

Ripley needs dropping to the bench though. He didn’t move an inch for their 2nd and 3rd goal. Portly vale
