I liked him, he has some poor games but then randomly destroyed James Milner in the Villa Cup tie if I recall, he was megging him and allsorts.

He was pretty steady from what I remember all at the level we're now back at(I've seen far worse tbh!), I'm sure he'd played in the AFCON for Nigeria before he joined Vale with players like Okocha, Kanu(ex Arsenal forward) who were quite skillful so definately had something on his day.  I seem to remember him scoring at Crewe with a daiser cutter as well?😁

Does anybody remember a young lad called  David Mitchell who i thought would have made a cracking centre forward only played a few games then had a bad injury.Another two names that i liked watching were Lee Harwood big lad in our defence and John Rodgers who was a quick centre forward had a cracking game at villa park both of them young players who could have served us well for a few seasons.

Yes I do, he played most of his games for us in that awful 1964/65 season when we were relegated.  It was during Freddie Steele's second and disastrous spell as manager which almost broke us. Mitchell seemed to have something about him but he dropped off. He was given a free transfer and bizarrely signed for Ipswich in Div 2 but he didn't make it there either.

Mitchell was a contemporary of Mel Machin who went on to have a stellar career.  Both were managed very poorly at Vale Park.

Who was the other Dutch lad who signed at the same time as Van Der Laan.

The saga surrounding Marcus Bent is one many would probably like to forget. Turned up the day before Rudge got sacked. Played on the wing by Horton. Sold for peanuts by Vale, then sold for millions 12 months later by Sheffield United.

Dave Artell anyone?

Remember signing Carl griffiths under Horton and think we paid a large fee for him. Was a decent goal scorer and thought how good a signing it was but don’t think he stayed long. Although he did score a vital goal against qpr I think in our relegation fight?

Him and Anthony Gardner scored in that game

Can anybody remember Grahame McGifford? I can remember his name from the late 70’s from when I was about 9 or 10. I can’t remember if he was any good or not, I don’t think he was with us for long.

Yes I remember him as well, he was a right back I thought we signed him from Huddersfield, but I just checked his wiki and we signed him from Hull, but he started out at Huddersfield.  He was one of three right backs that we tried to replace John Brodie with in successive seasons.  The others were Ian Osbourne and Neil Wilkinson, none of them managed do do anything of note.  We even resorted to playing Neil Griffiths at right back (for those who can't remember him, he was a very good left back and very left footed).  It took about 4 years to replace John Brodie when we signed Gerry Keenan from Bury. WE had a lot of forgettable players in that period of the late 70s early 80s.

I’m pleased you can remember him and as you say we had a lot of forgettable players at that time. I certainly remember Neil Griffiths, I think he had a bit of a powerful shot on him.
Whilst I remember John Brodie, I can only remember his name, I was taken to Vale games from a very early age, definitely too young to remember who played well or who had a bad game. The names that I remember from those days are, Bob Mountford, Keith Leonard, Gary Dulson, Tony Lacey, Sammy Morgan and John Woodward. Whilst I say I can’t remember who played well or not I did believe for a time that we had a player called Alan bloody Boswell, I can’t remember any Vale goalkeeper prior to him.

Thanks for your memories.
