When Mark went to Sheff Wednesday Howard Wilkinson was the manager and the pre season training involved loads of running round the streets of Sheffield. Mark reckoned he wasn't used to this, got left behind by the others and ended up getting lost!

What a lovely, lovely bloke Mark came over as in that interview. When people talk about Vale's all time great players. In my lifetime 'The Black Pearl' as I called him was head and shoulders above the rest.

I remember him playing against Lincoln when they were a division above us in an FA cup match and he tore their defence to pieces. I had never seen a display like it from such a young player. That day he was quite simply unplayable. The pride that he gave me to have such a talent playing for my team was amazing. Port Vale simply aren't supposed to have players with that measure of talent.

When I went to work on the following Monday after that game against Lincoln I said that he would play for England they all laughed but the 'Black Pearl' proved me right.

Sadly he never achieved all that he should have because of two reasons in my opinion. Poor managers who couldn't handle such talent and secondly quite simply he was too laidback for his own good.

Thanks for posting that interview it has brought back so many memories and it is good to see that Mark has blossomed into a great guy. It looks as if his son is a real 'chip off the old block'

I saw all of the games he played for us and was at congleton for a pre-season friendly when it was announced he had joined stoke so we went spare. Foxy joined us and all was forgotten. Testament to Chambo was the fact that within months of leaving us he was playing for England. Pure class.
