Loan Players from Stoke

Chambo and Harrison both moved to Stoke in a double deal - I remember seeing it on The Sentinel sandwich boards in the middle of Hanley and being absolutely gutted at losing our 2 best players.

Think Neville Chambo also joined them shortly afterwards (but I wasn't anything like as disappointed about that!)

Didn't McGrath use the transfer money to sign players like Fox, Newton, Cegielski, Hunter, Steel? (i.e. the nucleus of a promotion-winning team!)

Don't take this a 100% accurate but I'm fairly sure Hunter was signed before Chamberlain was sold. I don't think we paid a lot out in fees from that transfer, obviously Bob Newton. Steel came in late in the season, although not sure he was better than Moss; who we sold at the same time. I suspect Siddell got a pretty good wage.

I think Port Vale did ok out of it and a player of Chamberlain's calibre has to be let go to play at the highest level. I think he went downhill after leaving Stoke for another so called bigger club. I saw him make his debut at Stoke and he destroyed the then England left back Sansom. He should have had a career at John Barnes level in my view as I thought he was better. But I suppose a career of a decade or more in the top division was pretty good.

Neville Chamberlain looked like he needed development to play for Port Vale and wasn't ready for anything in higher divisions from memory. Completely different type of forward player from Mark

I was young at this time and attended PV and Stoke occasionally in those days; so may get stuff a bit mixed up.

You've got the Mark Chamberlain bit right; I was at that Stoke v Arsenal game as well and there wasn't a force on earth that could have stopped Mark that day, let alone Kenny Sansom.

Mark's hamstring went in his second (I think) season at Stoke. I think that was a big factor in his career never reaching quite the heights he could.  In the 80s hamstring surgery was almost unknown and blighted a lot of players.

You're right, Hunter arrived 12 months before Mark Chamberlain left. The money the club made on Chamberlain didn't go on transfer fees but may well have instead been invested in decent wages for free transfer signings

We were at a friendly at Congleton when the story broke and all hell broke lose.

It's funny how we remember things slightly differently. I'm almost 100% certain it was against York, it finished 2:1 and it was the Bycars end. After that it's a bit hazy. I thought the corner came from the Railway side but it's just an impression.

My overwhelming memory is the moments before, Greenhoff had missed a sitter and I was still busy hurling abuse at him as the ball flew into the net.

Corner defo from the Railway side Bycars End, Terry Armstrong took it, imo the best goal scored in my 51 years of supporting 👏👍
