I believe he scored in the 7-1 win over Chesterfield in 60/61 which was the last time we got 7 before last seasons Morecambe win!

one of the old man early memories of Vale which he keeps on about.

 

A very good goals to games ratio for post war football!

RIP Cliff, would have been a Vale legend if he had not been sold.

Very sad news, Cliff was always one of my favourite players, he had got flare and could score goals, the most memorable goal for me was in a FA cup match away to Scunthorp 59/60 season, we went on to win that match 1nil, then we went on to meet Aston Villa at home with a 49,000 crowd, losing that one. Once again R.I.P Cliff, you were a star.

Cliff Portwood was one of my heroes. So much so that, when he went on to play for Portsmouth later in the 60's, I even went to St*ke and stood on the Boothen End (supporting Pompey, of course) just to watch him play again.

 

I remember tracking him down a few years ago when he lived in Florida and I think I put him in touch with John Poole.

Very sad to hear the news about a great player from the past.I remember watching him, when I was a lad ,on the Hamil End and enjoyed his commitment.Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
