Keeper Crisis!!!!

I think Chris Martin was a better 'keeper than Tommo before Tommo came to Vale, made very few errors and looked confident, he looks a different goalie sinec Tommo came in!

I don't rate Tommo much at all, he's never sure when to come for crosses and when not to, and his indecisiveness puts more pressure on teh defence.

???? Are you on about the same player? Tomlinson comes for nearly every cross and gets most, he commands his area very well unlike Martin who is stuck to the goal line. Its Martins indecisiveness that puts the defence on edge.

Tommo commands his area and defence better than Martin does thats for sure

Irrespective of whether he does it better than Chris Martin or not, the one thing that Tommo is definitely incapable of doing is commanding his area--on too many occasions he's badly positioned for crosses and often 'gets under them.' At his relatively short height, he can never be "commanding" against taller players. Almost every goalie in the higher leagues is well over 6' 2" which clearly helps!

Again are you on about Martin here?! Every game ive seen of tomlinson, which is most he has commanded his area really really well, unlike martin who dosent come out for anything, open your eyes!

My eyes are wide-open--it's all a matter of opinion--and in this case we shall just have to agree to disagree. However the number of goals each conceeds will probably decide it and as clean sheets this season are as rare as the proverbial rocking horse poo, it can probably be argued that neither are good enough?

That's one way of looking at it. Another is that they didn't concede many last term and the defence is leaving them exposed. Maybe the defence flattered them last year, who knows. What I do know is that they are both more than capable at this level

Vale have two perfectly good keepers for this level and a relatively good history of bringing keepers through the younger ranks. Any club in this league will struggle to keep two main keepers focused, match-sharp and mentally occupied with few alternative games with limited numbers of friendlies or reserves.

League Two however is also where many promising young keepers would like to play to get noticed and get to a bigger club, but the opportunities are very few and far between. Some drop into the conference or non-league (go see some of the former senior league keepers there), some go abroad to the US on scholarships but many leave the game through lack of opportunity and not necessarily lack of talent or ability.

I suggest that there will be a "keeper crisis" in years to come due to the lack of home-grown goal keeping talent, but the game has only got itself to blame for the lack of foresight and planning.
