Why we need Neil Aspin.

I’ve seen many Vale fans voicing their opinion in the last week on the potential appointment of Aspo. For me, it’s a no brainer and a few bullet points why.

Firstly let’s get rid of the myth that he hasn’t league experience. 20 years ago I would have agreed with you but there is nothing between league 2 and the national league now. They are 90% professional football clubs. Aspos Gateshead got just over 600 supporters at the weekend. They are a professional club.

We bang on about our budget and certain idiots say it’s Norman putting the money in, yet we get five times Gatesheads crowd on a bad day! And they probably beat us in a competitive game right now!

Our last three managers, Page, Bruno, Brown, have just under 300 managerial matches between them. Aspin has over 600, spanning 12 years.

This isn’t a man about to have his first dance, like Glover and Foyle before him, so let’s get rid of the “been there before with ex players” nonsense. This is a man who has earned his stripes regardless of him being a Vale legend. Chesterfield have gambled with their legend in Jack Lester. Now THAT is a gamble. Aspin isn’t.

The man has an eye for a player. He signed Jamie Vardy. Sold Lee Gregory to Millwall as well. If anyone listened to Foyley on RS last night, he made a lot of sense. He’s fully supportive of his appointment.

Now, being 37, I can totally understand those in their teen years or early 20s who are looking at this appointment as just another Vale legend. But I think this time it’s totally different.

Neil Aspin is a successful lower league manager in his own right with an abundance of experience. Experience at a level right now that is no different to where we are at.

We are now Port Vale Football Club who are the worst team in the English football league. Joint one of three. By a distance.

We have fallen. We continue to fall. There is no hope............ But Aspin? Yes. There’s hope. There’s a man with over 600 managerial matches under his belt. Almost 400 matches for the club as a player. He knows the club. He knows the fans.

Hey, even if Rudgie isn’t on the payroll, do you really believe he won’t be getting a bit of advice from him? Course he will.

He’s been a very very good manager in his own right and yet it just so happens he is a Vale legend.

If it is Aspin, and it seemingly looks like it, it could be the best thing for the club in a long time.

We need reuniting as fans. We need renewed hope. We need a “manager”. We need somebody who will take no **** and ultimately we need somebody to grab this club by its balls and get it on track again.

Aspin, for me, out of all the duff candidates that have been banded around (ince westley) is by far the standout candidate for PVFC at this time.

For me, as it seems the owner is going nowhere, it’s an appointment to unite us all.

Aspin for Vale.

I agree with all of this. Aspin got Halifax back up the non league tower block to the National League as well. It is good from all the angles you give. But even if we went down to the National League, and like Micky Adams at Tranmere, he could not turn this situation around now, he would still be one of the best appointments possible to have a real crack at returning.

Fans have a tendency to underplay a manager when they're about to get poached; I and others were guilty with Page. Its a pride thing, its not nice to see someone come in and 'nick' your manager, especially if he's half decent.

Gateshead can go on about Pulis ball as long as they want; I want to win games. I just want to come away from Vale games having seen some goals and a few wins. Thats all I want. If they want to get high and mighty and his style of football, good luck to them.

I have been to Gateshead - to watch the athletics including Michael Johnson. I know South Tyneside well. South Shields were a football league team once - out of existence. Gateshead were also a football league team, but it is so long ago not many alive to remember. So the point is that its a competitive sport and we need a good appointment, because if we go down the wilderness beckons. Ask Southport. Ask Barrow. Ask Workington. Ask Bradford Park Avenue. Ask Darlington. Ask Hereford. Ask Chester. et al.

I want us to win home games, start getting rid of the mass of deadwood, and sign a keeper. And stay up.

Its pessimistic, its unambitious, but anything else is a bonus at this point.

No please, not another one!!!! Nor a winger. Nor a central defender. I'm sure we have some good players in the squad somewhere. Goal scorer needed for me. Aspin could reach down the North East mines if they were still there and find a Shearer. He did manage to find Vardy.

We have loads, but they're all rubbish/always injured.

CB I'm fine with Smith, Anderson, and Gunning. Wingers I'm fine with Harness and Whitfield.

We need a steady, reliable GK (Neal mould) first and foremost, and if we're being cheeky, a nippy, hungry striker to feed off Barnett/a revitalised Pope.

2 more posts from the Gateshead fans, the first in response to the post saying that he's not such a longball merchant...

Really?

I've seen a few times when we've put together a balanced team, which has produced an excellent victory (e.g Dover, Dagenham), but I find a lot of the time that there are too many people behind the ball, and there is no fluidity at all, with the ball being launched up 95% of the time.

In the two years Aspin has been in charge we have played about 40 home games, probably only about 5 games where I have gone home thinking what a great game. Majority were boring even when we won. This is reflected in falling gates, plus the man never ever tried to integrate with the supporters.

Anyway, I've made my point and will leave it now that it seems that he is actually coming. I wish him nothing but great things and hope with all my heart that he makes a success of this.

Gateshead have issued a statement saying their assistant manager will be in charge for their game tonight due to the ongoing discussions about Aspins future. Surely that near enough confirms him as ours?

I don; think there's a a way back for him there now, I see that statement as good as a green light (touch wood!).

Can you read? It's from a Gateshead forum. That's how I 'no' it.

Ha ha headmaster, oh great one ‘know’ I do apologise I bow to you and your superior knowledge of the game , but I’ve screened shot your prophecies today on here and when aspin comes and delivers back to where we belong I will put your comments back on a thread no worries

Good luck to them wanting 'fluidity', men in front of the ball, carpet football, and great games. I guess his 40% win ratio and near play-off finishes aren't good enough if you aren't passing teams off the park. What I'd give for rubbish football and 40% wins in a season at this point.

Us silly little Vale fans are only asking for wins and goals. I bow down to their vision of tika-taka, Pep Guardiola football in the Conference.
