Match thread: Slovenia v England

I think you might be right, particularly if there is a big league game or Champions League fixture coming up.

And, of course, the foreign owners, managers and players are not bothered at all about England matches. It's all, as you say, an inconvenience that disrupts their preparation for the next game and one that can end up with players getting injured.

This attitude must seep through to the players to a lesser or greater extent and, of course, we've seen many occasions over the years when players have dropped out of England squads only to appear [Lazarus-like] in their club's next fixture.

One thing that fascinated me last night was Cahill's haircut. It looked like something his mates had done with a razor while he was lying p****d on a sofa.

Our centre-backs are a real worry,Stones,Cahill and Smalling are all disasters waiting to happen. However, going forward with Kane,Sterling and Lallana back in the team I believe we can be a real threat going forward.

Foreign owners appoint foreign managers who sign foreign players.

English lads get very little chance to play regularly and learn their trade as clubs demand instant success. So everyone buys big from abroad instead of bringing through youngsters and giving them an extended chance.

Even Stoke now follow this policy. I think I'm right in saying that their last XI only contained 2 English players, and that's more sometimes than the likes of Arsenal & Chelsea! I accept that it takes years to come to fruition but Stoke's expensive Academy has not produced any regular first team players at all.

We are picking a national team (and the manager if we want him to be English) from a decreasing pool of players. It wasn't like this in the past when every top English side in the 60s, 70s & 80s had a core of English lads playing for them.

What's the answer? I really don't know because I can't see the system changing while the goose continually churns out bigger and bigger golden eggs and foreign owners are buying clubs to get their hands on the money.

The players at our disposal are not great at present - no - but I think a lot of it is to do with the system in which top class football operates now.

It mitigates against the growth and development of young English players.

True..well British players anyway. But even in the 70s we failed to qualify for a single WC..1970 we were the holders

The England team at the weekend was littered with players who are regularly picked by foreign managers for their clubs and must be performing or they would not get picked (well maybe Cahill is an exception!!)...something wrong in their heads and hearts when they play for England. Or maybe it's the PL that isn't all it's cracked up to be so they get away with not being as good as they seem...it would be interesting to see how the likes of Walker, Rose, Alli, Vardy, Lingard etc did in Spain or Germany

Number of English players in the PL stands at around 32% according to this report, compared with 69% twenty years ago.

It was clear to me how much Adam Lallana was missed. He's our best player at linking midfield with attack, keeps possession better than any other player in the squad and in his current form is a big miss.

Also amusing that whipping boy Henderson was criticised here for a poor game after a man-of-the-match performance the previous match, and yet both Lingard and Walcott were every bit as poor if not worse.
